rockingham offshore fishing

think of going out on the boat on tuesday or wednesday. we will be launching at the south side of garden island. does anyone know how far you have to go out to get some demersels like snapper, sambos and dhuies. i was wondering what bait or plastic to use for these species, what size gear i will need, what size line. some help would be great

There's plenty of reef
There's plenty of reef around in close. I've caught dhu fish in 10metres of water annchored up and burlying. I normally fish from the southern tip of Garden Island to about 3/4 toward the north end from 14m to 25m inside the five fathom bank. There's not as much in the 20's as there is in closer to GI. There's also plenty of ground in the 25m depth on the other side of the five fathom bank. And I normally use the Californian Squid and whiting if I catch it.

Thanks for putting this info on here, very interesting reading,as I fish in close on the Ski around Garden Island.
Now I'm thinking I'll have to try a new strategy when I'm next out.

The one in my profile picture is from a night fish. I went back the next day to see where I caught it during light and I could see the bottom. I normally drift fish but there are days that I anchor too. There's been heaps of sambos in close when I was out 3 weeks ago but not sure if they're still around as I haven't been out in close lately.

I bottom bounce with a 30lb fin nor jig rod and a saragossa 8000 reel. It's more than enough.
