mate the blokes i take over pay double that for the day.
Thats boat + Fuel + skipper + deckie.
Day starts for me at 5am and the last 2 years finished at sundown.
Long day so should be prepared to pay for it.

Bodie correct,big 6m boat
Bodie correct,
big 6m boat will use at least a good $150 min in fuel, my Berty would be easily 100 liters for the day, remembering you iddling along at less the cruise speed... plus the run back with the guys on board etc.
and if the weather turns nasty at the end of the day, you want to get back nice and safe too. So asking over $1000 is not too bad, it's les than a half day charter boat costs these days!

wouldnt do it for anything less...its a long hard day.
Last 2 years weather has been good, due for a day when its not...and that wont be any fun.

fair enough

Would be interesting to see
Would be interesting to see how many "did not starts" are caused by not having an adequate boat on the day. A shame for those that put in the effort and miss out on the ballot

Thought boat had to be registered long ago
Thought the application required the info on the support boat but not the canoe-ist - I know that the race committee will not allow transfer of support boats during the race as have personal experience of a flat out rejection after major engine failure mid way.........and I would be dammed if I would EVER skipper for the event again I go boating for peace, tranquility and relaxation not stress with a capital S
Still I have nothing but admiration for the swimmers themselves ...........bloody awesome to even attempt it !

Yes they have to put in
Yes they have to put in their boat details when first registering, but have till the 17th of February to swap boat details. as a lot of people find out the hard way closer to the date that the guy at the pub who offered to take his boat over doesn't own a boat and his dad won't let him borrow his. Goes on a fair especially with the all girl teams

A few boaters tend to pull
A few boaters tend to pull out and let teams swimming down. The add could have been after i suggested it be posted on here as we get loads of calls.
For anyone thinking of driving don't underestimate the day. As Brodie has said it is hell on water and should not be entered into lightly. You really need to know your sh-t and be extremely confident on the water and in your boat. Even more so as often many boaters aren't and you then need to react to there short falls.
Damage and loads of wear and tear on your boat as well needs to be considered. Many teams miss the start due to last minute boat problems..

Old fart did it
for a neighbour's friend about 10yrs ago, we got a nice meal paid for after the event (next weekend as a big thank you,) old fart did it didn't worry about how much to charge, just said pay for the fuel, as his motor under certain revs only uses two cyclinders set up for trolling, did it for a neighbours friend that we didn't know. But must admit he wouldn't do it again, too many hassles and red-bullsh..t-tape.

Shit- I'm doing it
And for free to help a neighbors nephew. I'm happy to just keep them safe and see what happens. These boys put a truck load of training in and I couldn't do it. Got to admire that. Maybe it'll go to poo and I won't do it next year but hope not.

advise for those who are
advise for those who are skippering, especially those who are first timers.
Take it slow, move around slow. Its very easy to do damage to other boats with boats flying around.
Ther eis litterally thousands of boats all crammed together.

Also keep a constant look out
Also keep a constant look out at what the other boats around you are doing, especially those up wind or drift from you..
As for the amount charged. If you know the people great, hell last year my mates took my 31'for the weekend for nothing, but if its for a team that you have no affiliate with than payment of around $1500 is fine. But be prepared to understand they are hiring you and expect some professionalism for there Money..

And NEVER use reverse
Saw some horrible near misses (with idiots overshooting and then blythly putting the boat in reverse despite the briefing banning the use thereof) when I skippered and was rammed by one idiot who had no idea how to manoeuvre his dads boat = never again !
However nothing but admiration for the swimmers hell they have some stamina and the strong breezes this week might well again pose the dilemma of a strong northerly drift causing a much longer curved course toward the south west however the Lew Current has been piping recently so even the nav is going to pose some interesting problems ...............could be a tough year

Today is the last day to swap/nominate boats for the swimmers.
One desparate request on Gumtree now, ater that they cannot compete.
