im sorry mate but that video is disgusting, obviously youve never seen a beautiful fish like that swim away or you wouldnt be so glad to have pulled the amazing creature out of the ocean and see it killed. if you want my opinion use a rod and reel like the rest of the guys on this forum, and when you catch a sail take a quick pic and send it on its merry way.
Sorry if it offended you in any way, i just hate seeing a beautiful fish like that being killed. at least it was eaten, unlike a story i heard of a 100cm+ barramundi being kept, then burried in the back yard as the guy that caught it didnt have enough room in his freezer or something.
I keep enough for a feed but even then I would never keep such a beautiful fish. I get a frustrated with myself when I can't save an undersized fish whether it be a bream, tailor, even a trumpeter that swallowed a hook, let alone killing such a beautiful creature for fun.
The general consensus of Australians is that sailfish is no good to eat and is usually caught and released for sport, but hey if you guys ate it I fail to see why these guys are getting so upset about.
Can't say I enjoyed watching that vid Khaled...but I think thats just our Aussie mindset of letting the big beautiful fish swim off to fight another day. Sort of fools us into thinking we're environmentalist's, or something...
Anyway, you ate it so its not a waste at least.
I've seen pics of the same species caught and kept from Quobba and Steep Pt, they got congratulated...
Never caught or ate one, just trying to answer his question as to why others were upset. Have enjoyed swordfish before so if similar count me in for a cutlet
Khaled can you give us a little more information about how you caught it please? It looked like a handline, did you drift the bait out attached to something?
be prepared to cop more critisism on this forum because most users hold Billfish in such high regard that killing one is very poor form. Sure in some countries or cultures catching and eating Billfish is normal but not here, in WA.
I'm not FOR the keeping of saily's, gotta state that.
But some people fish for sustinance, others for 'sport', and there's only one bloke fit to judge which is right and wrong.
Back when I was worked as a chef I was amazed how these 'sport' fisherman had no problems insisting Swordfish was on the menu, but if you caught and kept a billfish you were considered an animal...???
Wish I'd caught it tho, and yep I would have released it as well.
What some people fail to understand Khaled, is other cultures have been catching & eating these fish Long before Australia was even colonised. Also that in many area's they can only eat the Palagic species as others bottom dwelling species that we hold in hi regard can't be eaten due to ciguterra. As long as it is kept for consumption I don't see the issue between that or any other species of fish.
Na I was talking about the tools here bagging you. A dhui is considered here a top prize fish and they are only found here in western australia. Not all over the world.
I have no problem with you catching and eating a sailfish. They look like they have a high percentage of meat to weight. Not like a dhui here which has 50 percent meat 50 percent head.
If it was killed to be eaten I have no problem with that, especially after the huge effort the fisherman had gone to. When fish are just killed for a photo thats where my problem lies. I dont think anyone really enjoys watching a fish such as that be killed on film though, perhaps just a picture might do next time.
Guess there would be some serious whingers about the 200kg marlin caught and hung at gamex on Sunday night. Wonder how much of that actually got eaten??
Well done Khaled on a well deserved catch, if you choose to eat it then thats totally up to you.
I disagree with many people here, its a sailfish who cares ? I personally would have released such a large fish respectfully. But at the end of the day, It did not go to waste at all , and was fully consumed. Like previously stated a bloke who snaggs a 20kg dhufish is deemed a fuc*in hero and they are much more rare and precious then a sailfish or marlin which are caught all over the world. N have we ever stop to consider that they dont get top notch eating fish as easily as we can ?. I think good on him i have alot of respect considering it was caught on a handline and the time and effort he put it in. Good job.
Yes a great effort from the beach and Im glad you got a feed .As said all have their opinions and I see nothing wrong with you fishing for a feed .Well done
Gee just read through this Pheww. Good on you khaled for getting a feed for your family there's no differance than catching a Dhuie and carving it up for a feed. I'm guessing you guys aren't that well off and any good food that comes your way is a bonus. And top marks for inginuity you could probably teach a few tricks on this site.
