Coming up to that time of year again. Heard reports around Albany and as far west as Yeagerup. I know it is a bit early but any sign between the capes??
Saw a one big school (only one though) at Sinker Reef near Two Peoples Bay 2 weeks ago.
Fish looked to be about the 4kg size. To far out to cast to though :-(
Out at Bremmer we haven't missed them with schools at most beaches the last month, was 6-8 tons at cheynes a few weeks ago for a few days, been getting them at Shelly's, west capes, deeps and ocean beach fairly commonly with small groups coming past.
Salmon is a dirty dirty word can't wait for the to be gone already haha. Won't be long and anything you throw in the water will get eaten by the stupid fish.
Ik this is a long time ago but on Boxing Day we went to yeagerup, which should be the totally erong season but over 5 days we caught 4 salmon, a couple tailor, lots of other fish but we saw a guy catch 5 6KG+ salmon from Kennys Corner which I didn't fish but the salmon were there. People were catching them all the way down to the Meerup river. All fish were caught on bait
A few starting to turn up at Parry Beach 20ks west of Denmark. Caught one about 5kg and two about half that size on Friday arvo. Lost 2 others. A few more turned up over the weekend. Too windy & choppy to spot schools so just soaking baits. Heaps of 30cm+ herring meant baits didn't last long. The bigger one grabbed a live herring.
The salmon are around, caught 4 in no time near Walpole - Australia Day, while targeting sharks. I havent been fishing since then. I agree with Chrisfish. The best use for a salmon is to use it to catch something bigger! Strip bait or live.
There was a picture in yesterday's west that was taken from the Westpac chopper showing a shark with a school of salmon that was taken near Bunkers, so I'd hazard a guess and say yes, they are about.
Zip at shelleys this morning despite a great easterly swell and not wester winds. Couple of schools moving through between 300 and 500m out which even my best pendulum lobs wouldn't make. Big school sat at salmon holes now, not taking bait or lures from the 30 sitting ducks perched on the rocks.
I know most of you know , but some may not , we always have great success from april onwards on the south coast ,which not
accidently is when the weather changes , and we like to see at least one decent blow , before we head to the south coast.
It can spread the schools out , and leave part time residents behind , which wait for the bigger schools to return on the back run, to meet up.
This back run can start as early as mid april, if the schools encounter favorable conditions to spawn before even reaching the metro area ( hence a poor metro year)
Last year we encounted this in the bremer area mid-late april , and got sick of catching them after 3 days on a less than good moon phase..
And yes back run fish are hungry and seem a bit leener than the fatter , semi resident fish. I think of it this way
A guy on his way to a nightclub dont stop for a kabab, but on the way home slowly navigates his way stopping when he gets the munchies!
Sounds good quadfisher. As good as it is living in the SW and being able to drive 20min for a salmon it is awesome being on a remote beach down south on your own. Definitely get sick of all the muppets casting over you when a school swims by at beaches like Bunkers etc.
Choc, it's those same muppets than pump $1000s of dollars into your local SW economy to come and have a crack at a salmon in Bunkers bay etc.
I'm so sick of some of the SW locals that think they own the resource and the local beaches.
If some "muppet" isn't as good at casting as you, maybe you should give them a few tips, or maybe give them a chance to cast and hook a fish and let them move aside without the pressure of feeling like they are a muppet. I bet you were just as useless once upon a time? Everyone's gotta start somewhere.
If you're as good as you think you are, I'd say you should know better spots to catch Salmon than Bunker Bay.
Here's hoping I put a big juicy cast over your line this season
sorry but the $1000's these should we call them 'fishos' put into the SW economy is trivial compared to what is earned through events like :
Busselton Ironman, Busselton Jetty Swim, Busselton Festival/Oz Rock, 3 or 4 Leeuwin Concerts and Sandalford events, Sw Beer fest, Margaret River Pro along with other various Surfing Events, Anaconda/X Adventure, Cape to Cape MTB race, etc. etc. etc.
Most if not all of our accomodation is booked out solid for all school holidays and Public Holiday long weekends let alone other various time throughout the year.
Not to mention the piles of cash generated by the Margaret River Wine Industry.
Salmon fisho's would contribute very little compared to all the other tourists we have down here.
You seemed to miss the point of the argument...some poor bugger has probably paid good money to visit the south west and catch a salmon this time of year (rather than his/her usual herring or whiting). But some groups of ignorant SW locals see it's their right to bag some poor guy or girl (read "muppet") for having a crack at what is equally their right to do so.
That's what pisses me off.
And agree, those events are also great reasons to visit the ass end of WA and spend some money.
So as for your argument, trivial or not, the spend is irrelevant, and does not make the fishery your resource.
Looking forward to rubbing shoulders with like minded "fishos" again this year and enjoying some multiple hook-ups alongside some decent people.
Back on topic then kids, got a few good sized lumps this morning of sand patch. A school passed way out being herded by Dolphins but a few stragglers entered the gutter I was fishing with the old boy. We landed 5 in a brief morning session all good sized 6-8 kegs. Didn't get time to scope out any other beaches as I was tour guide for the day with visitors.
I wasn't talking about people who are new to the game but the guys who come down and are following a school up the beach casting lures, they come across baitfishos who have their lines out and instead of going around them they just continue casting out over set lines.
This in my opinion classifies them as muppets. I have helped many a tourist catch their first salmon over the years and also love giving them tips on rigs and methods to do so. Nothing better than the smile on someones face when they get their first salmon.
The salmon are definitely starting to turn up now around Augusta for those interested.
Thanks for the feed back mat. Bunker is for sure the best place to target salmon close to home, get into it fellas. by the way im curious most of your posts previously have a one eye smiley face, have you lost a eye and have a pirate patch over your eye? ?
Managed to entice a good school in at sand patch this morning...all to myself. Landed around 15-20 good sized models out of a nice gutter. was quiet at first light but a tub of tuna oil and a kilo of mulies seemed to do the trick. Had a great time watching a couple of chunky whalers pushing through the schools from the lookouts. Will be surprised if there are real schools between the capes yet. Most of the old boys I spoke to in albany seemed to think the fish hadn't 'properly' arrived in Albany.
Spotted a school at bunkers a week or so ago, resident fish probably, only around 5 in the school. Through live sand whiting, plugs and smiling jacks at them, had one have a look at he bait but was not that interested.
the bloody herring are in plague proportions all along the coast down here at the minute
we could have caught our bag limit of herring yesterday with 85grm lures , no probs , they where just covering every cast like flies after your retrieve and they where big ,
been big lots of salmon up the coast today , id be giving inji ,mitchells wyadup , canal smiths & torpedo a look in the mornings this week if your close by
Just back from Hamelin, they are in plague proportions down there.. schools almost all day long, had one on my own Friday morning and must have caught 15 in an hour... every cast really.
Today a big school came into the bay, probably 10-15 tonne or more. Boats were making it hard work for the shore people tho.
Got in for a dive on a shallow reef to have a BIG school come in and swim round me, pretty cool until 2 rather large sharks followed them in!!! needless to say I was out pretty quick.
anyone heading down that way , be mnindfull of the tracks and coast access along the cliffs & onto the beaches etc ,
had a report of a landrover discovery getting in to major difficulties , rolled sideways down off a track & onto a beach ,left damaged on the beach and a hilux abandoned badly bogged at one particular beach , hopefully no one was badly hurt
drive carefully and check out the track ahead before you just drive on ,
not all of the beaches are the same , some need very soft tyre pressure and carefull driving or you can come to grief very quickly
the salmon were so bloody thick massive schools passing constantly over 200 fish caught and released in 2.5 days between 5 of us and at a guess id say 400 t0 500 tonne seen moving up the coast! never seen them so thick
I arrived at my favourite spot south of Hamelin yesterday morning at 4am. It was still dark so I shone my head torch into the water in front of me. I couldn't believe my eyes! There were 2 or 3 hundred Salmon holed up tight to the shore. It was low tide and the water was so shallow their tails fins were sticking out. It reminded me of a fish farm. I poured some liquid berley in to try and keep them around and maybe get them on the feed. Unfortunately it attracted a small shark and resulted in complete chaos with Salmon panicking and jumping everywhere as the shark tore into them. All this before sun up! Once the shark had gone they calmed down and came on the feed with a vengeance. I lost count but reckon I had 10 or 12 out over the next hour. Once the sun came up they started to moved out so I reckon they come close in to shore at night just to hide from the sharks. It was working until some dick threw a load of berley in! One of my most memorable/successful fishing trips and it was all over by 8am.
Who knows. I gave up trying to predict salmon movements years ago. There's 2 basic strategies. Pick a spot and stay there hoping they'll turn up at some point or stay mobile and drive/walk around looking for them. I prefer the second option but it can be a lot of effort for nothing. But on the right day in the right place it can be all worth it. Good luck!
Hi was that the spot called hospitals where all the salmon were, the rocky inlet just to the south of where the car park is? We arrived about 630 am that same morning but went north, wish we entry south.
Landed a few stragglers off the rocks at Cosy Corner late on Saturday afternoon, wind was a challenge to cast into but 4 in an hour was entertaining enough. All hook ups on divers, the bow in the line from the SW'er was enough to keep anything less than 70g skipping on the surface!
According to Facebok, there seemed to have been some good hauls at Hamelin, but a number of the old salts I was chatting to hadn't seen a fish all day.
Surfed Redgate on Sunday morning and had a good school swim under the boards around 7am. Not a massive school probably comprising a few hundred fish moving quite fast and spreading across the beach as a few of us saw them.
mates fished Hamelin on Thursday , had a good day with salmon and herring
we went down to that area on sunday , swell was a challenge , but we had the beach to ourselves , our group landed plenty of salmon , regular schools coming through , with the bigger swell they stayed wide off the beach , which made us all use large metals or richters, to reach out to them ,
we found each school hit the lures hard for the first few hook ups , then shut down and moved offshore , if we gave them 15 mins quite time they fired up again further up the beach
anyone that was chasing salmon who didn't get into them over easter must have been dam unlucky as there everywhere
heard a first hand report of a mate who went out with a charter into geo bay , reckons they parked up on a school over 2 acres of salmon , about 1.5km of meelup , apparently the local rec boats found them and hit them hard with upwards of 50 boats trying to hook up
I had planned to hit up Boranup on Sunday morning whilst the wind was good, but with the pulse in swell coming through I wanted to get out on the board. How is the beach looking at the moment, it must be seeing some traffic?
Mandurah was turning yp the heat this weekend! Fished the entrance of the cut in the arvo and had a great time. Took 3 7KG fish home, 2 more snapped the line, 3 huge buggers spat my live herring while in mid air (gave me a dirty look whioe doin it) and let another 4 go to fight another day. Few schools just running back and forth all day. Was awesome non stop action to say the least

zip at cheynes
spent over a week at Cheynes beach last week and the week before that. not only NO salmon, I only caught 1 herring from the beach the whole trip.
there were a few bonito just off the tourist rocks though (in the dinghy), but it was generally the worst fishing Ive ever had down there.

Drive to Bremer?
Nah.
I'm guessing by the end of March we will be catching them solid along
the capes coast at all the usual haunts.
I think alot of crew get a little twitchy by mid March if they haven't turned
the corner yet.
Similar thing happened last year and we had possibly the best Salmon run this decade.

Close your eyes and the time flys by.
Each to his own Matt, I might mention , we never saw another vehicle , let alone person for that 3 days, in our
east of bluff creek remote beach.
We saw dolphins surfing , baby seals in the waves , sea eagles , and hundreds if not thousands of herring being
herded by salmon , nature at its raw best , not a carpark , sign , ranger , or any bars on the phone in site, heaven as far as im concerned
, and feel privlidged to be able to do it.

Anyway
back to the Salmon.
Spotted a school of residents (30-40 fish) off Rocky Point late last week.
Couldn't tempt them with anything in my tackle bag.
Or catch a Live Herring so just left them there for another time.
We need a bit of swell/wind or even better a cold front to break up the schools down south before we see them along the capes coast.

Just back from Hamelin, they
Just back from Hamelin, they are in plague proportions down there.. schools almost all day long, had one on my own Friday morning and must have caught 15 in an hour... every cast really.
Today a big school came into the bay, probably 10-15 tonne or more. Boats were making it hard work for the shore people tho.
Got in for a dive on a shallow reef to have a BIG school come in and swim round me, pretty cool until 2 rather large sharks followed them in!!! needless to say I was out pretty quick.

anyone heading down that way
anyone heading down that way , be mnindfull of the tracks and coast access along the cliffs & onto the beaches etc ,
had a report of a landrover discovery getting in to major difficulties , rolled sideways down off a track & onto a beach ,left damaged on the beach and a hilux abandoned badly bogged at one particular beach , hopefully no one was badly hurt
drive carefully and check out the track ahead before you just drive on ,
not all of the beaches are the same , some need very soft tyre pressure and carefull driving or you can come to grief very quickly

Found a couple small schools
Found a couple small schools along the rocks south of Cheynes on Saturday, but they were few and far between.
Same again on Sunday around the islands in the Sound.
Frustrating stuff.

Salmon Vs Shark

Hamelin
Good luck!

Landed a few stragglers off
Landed a few stragglers off the rocks at Cosy Corner late on Saturday afternoon, wind was a challenge to cast into but 4 in an hour was entertaining enough.
Not a massive school probably comprising a few hundred fish moving quite fast and spreading across the beach as a few of us saw them.

mates fished Hamelin on
mates fished Hamelin on Thursday , had a good day with salmon and herring
we went down to that area on sunday , swell was a challenge , but we had the beach to ourselves , our group landed plenty of salmon , regular schools coming through , with the bigger swell they stayed wide off the beach , which made us all use large metals or richters, to reach out to them ,
we found each school hit the lures hard for the first few hook ups , then shut down and moved offshore , if we gave them 15 mins quite time they fired up again further up the beach
anyone that was chasing salmon who didn't get into them over easter must have been dam unlucky as there everywhere
heard a first hand report of a mate who went out with a charter into geo bay , reckons they parked up on a school over 2 acres of salmon , about 1.5km of meelup , apparently the local rec boats found them and hit them hard with upwards of 50 boats trying to hook up

I had planned to hit up
I had planned to hit up Boranup on Sunday morning whilst the wind was good, but with the pulse in swell coming through I wanted to get out on the board. How is the beach looking at the moment, it must be seeing some traffic?

After never been salmon
After never been salmon fishing, and just finding out this will be my last year in perth.
where would a good place to target some this weekend? I have a 4wd and would rather drive along a beach somewhere and throw lures all day?
Mandurah area would be the furthest I would travel
Thanks Zac

Mandurah
Mandurah was turning yp the heat this weekend! Fished the entrance of the cut in the arvo and had a great time. Took 3 7KG fish home, 2 more snapped the line, 3 huge buggers spat my live herring while in mid air (gave me a dirty look whioe doin it) and let another 4 go to fight another day. Few schools just running back and forth all day. Was awesome non stop action to say the least
