Salmon poppers
Submitted by MrMulloway on Thu, 2011-03-31 21:17
I am going to busselton this Easter and hopefully catch a few salmon. Can anyone tell me good poppers for salmon? I heard 105mm roosta poppers in bonito colour are good.

Any poppers are good mate!
Any poppers are good mate! They love the splashing and they'll jump on anything! Make sure you have a few metal's to throw out too if the wind is up or you have to get maximum distance... sometimes the poppers won't get out there far enough.

Agree Goodz
Have to agree with Goodz, Popers are about action not colour(some might disagree)
Metals will give distance if needed and can be left to sink first then worked back. covering different depth's.

as already mentioned, with
as already mentioned, with poppers its all about the action and how you work with them. most people tend to disagree, therefore some faveourite colours that i found sell the most, are the redhead, pilchard and bonito.

I like the red n white and the black n gold... no reason though probably just superstition lol.
I have a black n gold roosta thats hanging on its last legs. Its like 8 years old I think. missing an eye, full of teeth marks.... but its still my go to popper lol
Not all that experienced in terms of popping, but makes sense that its about action not colour

red and white
I think action matter's best but have to agree with cuthbad, i tend to use red and white(clasic colour in any lure)
And gold surface lures catch more salmon (OMO)

Smiling Jack
Get yourself a couple of Smiling Jack's they are are cheap bibbed minnow and are the best lure for salmon if you are fishing in the bay. Even if they are fussy i have found they will hit these above anything else. Alot of the locals down that way use them.
good luck

Nah mate,
smiling jacks are old news. Rapala X-rap sxr14 are the most effective salmon lure i've used. i have one particular lure that has caught in excess of 80, replaced the hooks and rings twice. Smiling jacks are good but are a bit light @25grams, sxr14 are closer to 50grams.
Best popper i've used would have to be Richter plugs followed by Cotton Corden pencil popper or Kingfisher Fat R's. Halco Roosters are OK if conditions are flat.

X rap
I agree on the west coast as you need the extra weight but in the bay i have tried the xrap and still found the smilin jack outfished it comfortably.
Like you have said i just hope we get a chance to through anything at the moment!!!!!

dont forget the richter
dont forget the richter plugs! Has the action of a popper but the weight of a metal slice, cant argue with that!

havnt used lures before
i never caught anything on a lure before..except up at exy but i think thats cheating up there and doesnt count haha - just let it sit out behind the boat as we went along...
you guys talk about the action - what do you mean? like how you real it in?
i go down and do an annual salmon fish down in windy harbour...do you guys think lures might be ok down there or can it be too rough for them off the beach? or would a metal slice be better off down there? we usually use mulies on a surf rig and just let it sit out there - using a lure might be fun tho!

Salmon on poppers is great
Salmon on poppers is great fun but imo not the most effective way of catching them. I find minnows, sp's and metals far more effective. Its all about getting the lures to where the fish are holding.

Slices
Have tried heaps of different types, poppers, divers but have always had the most success on the biggest chrome slices. Most people turn away from them because they are cheap and they think it just something dumped on the market that doesn't work but they couldn't be further from the truth..
The one that used to come close to them was the big wonder wobbler that isn't available any more.

About the only time I've
About the only time I've found colors to make any difference in poppers is dawn and dusk, when a strong silhouette is more visible to the fish, or in heavy froth whitewater conditions like around wave washed reefs. If the salmon might have trouble seeing the popper go something that will stand out against the conditions, like a pink or purple based combo.
Don't discount soft plastics either, the salmon love em!

Land based or out wide?
I'm also heading to Busso this easter. Perhaps we'll cross paths.
Can anyone tell me if its worth a try off the jetty or shore. I still havent broken my salmon cherry.
Just after some knowledge for location etc. I've got all my gear lined up.

if they are close to shore,
if they are close to shore, for sure poppers work. I've definately caught salmon with poppers from the beach at Yeagarup. They were in close enough that i could even reach them with a popper despite the never-ending wind in your face. Much more fun than a mulie on a paternoster, but you get tired/bored quickly if they are not around ;-)

Unless things improve
very very quickly I doubt there will be any Salmon coming within 30km of Busselton.
Spent a few hours down at Inji's this morning, not a cracker.
You'll have alot more chance on the South Coast.

Boat
If you've got access to a boat then flicking stickbaits is good fun and very visual. Tango dancers, rapala x-walks and yozuri hydro pencils are great.

Salmon poppers.
Dont overlook the larger Roosta 135 as well. They are heavier if you need the casting distance and they work well for both slow blooping and fast retrieve techniques.
Another highly recommend popper is the Richter Plug. Available from 1/2 oz to 5oz, they cast a mile and unbreakable, also not expensive.

Rihter's really work
As already said a couple of times, can't go past Ritcher Plugs.
Come in a range of weights and cast almost as good as metals.
What I like about plugs is the salmon will chase a fast retrieved plug, drawing the fish out of the school before hookup and not spooking the whole school.
Most of all, they really work!
