Sarca Anchor

I am chasing a new anchor for my boat and am looking at the Sarca models.

They are pretty expensive and was wondering if they are worth the money?

Any feedback positive or negative would be appreciated.

Cheers

My reasearch.

Sun, 2010-05-09 22:17

A while back when I wanted a new anchor, I did a fair bit of "surfing" on the net, read alot of reviews etc etc.

The debate on the best type of anchor will go on for ever, each claiming to be the best.

I was keen on a Sarca, but brought a Delta. The reason if you are anchored and the direction of the wind/current causes your boat to drift over and away in the oppostite diection, the anchor will pull out. Thats what I read anyway.

I brought a Delta as it supposedly turns about but stays in place.

There are alot of persons using Sarca's so it can't be that bad.

If you buy a SACA, make sure that you buy the correct "D" shackle, if using a standard shackle, as it moves along the slot in the shaft of the anchor, it will loosen the shackle bolt.

If using a standard shackle, I would drill out the thread in the "D" buy a bolt that goes all the way through. Screw up using a nyloc nut, but leave the bolt loose so it easily rotates. Then grind off any protruding thread so it wont foul up with the chain or rope.

I think you need to be careful

Modifying any shackles.  They should be load rated and tested with a safe working load.  Granted its not like its being used in a lifting sling but I know that you cannot weld them, and swapping out the pin with a bolt is a no no either. The heating from the welding or drilling can affect the temper of the steel.  Replacing the pin with a bolt is dangerous as wont match the manufacturers specifications.  If you think about the way force is applied to the shackle in a tension environment 1/2 of the strength is in the pin.  If you need to have it rotate there are large rated swivels that can be put in the line, and safety pin shackles to ensure the pin doesnt come out. Or you can "whip" the pin to the body of the shackle with twitching wire.

Just my two cents.

Mouse

What you need to do to stop the shackle coming undone is "mouse" it.It means to feed stainless wire through to hole in the shackle pin/bolt and go round through the bight of the shackle and back through the hole again a number of times then twist both ends together preventing the pin fron turning. Much the same as using a castellated nut and split pin

they worth every

they worth every penny!

nothing comes near them for sure holding power.

after six years of boating in WA, I will still take a SARCA everytime.
At the moment my new tub does not have a SARCA, but that will change in a few months once the bow sprit has been changes to allow a SARCA.
Also they work best with a good lenght of chain ( at least the lenght of your boat) and use a quality stainless steel shackle, as nothing like loosing a $400 anchor cause a $20 shackle failed!

Have been using a SARCA too

Mon, 2010-05-10 11:30

Have been using a SARCA with my 5.8m Ally for about 4 years now. Love it. Never had it come unstuck so far. But like Tony i too have been very generous with the length of chain, and have a quality SS shackle that i use a piece of wire tied through the little hole on the end of the pin to around the shackle. Stops the shackle from coming undone.

Mine's a Sarca too

Mon, 2010-05-10 12:53

I have a Sarca on my 6/5 Razerline - they are an awesome anchor.

First  experienced them on 18' Shark Cat a few years back, where anchoring was causing much grief, with various anchors dragging. Install one Sarca, no more dragged anchor!

Didn't muck around when we bought a 28ft Kevlacat too - once again the Sarca was brilliant.

It would take a special salesman to get me to change brands now!

Yeah not many if any would

Yeah not many if any would ever go back after having a Sarca.

Me too. I know have the Sarca Excell and it fits my bow sprit very well. I use a stainless steel schakle but i cut the tab of and hit the end with a pin punch, so as to de-shape the shackle pin so it can't undo itself.

Manson Supreme

Mon, 2010-05-17 18:52

I use a  Manson Supreme anchor from New Zealand, shopped for ages and that's what I settled with. Grabs in any bottom type, and is easy to retrieve.

The first to be certified by Lloyds Register of Shipping as a super high power anchor.
