Saturday & Sunday 24 / 25 Sept Fishing - Tailor 56cm & Skippy's.

Decided Saturday to go test my newly aquired Daiwa Emcast with my Euro SPRO FFWD 14ft rod and some other gear North of Perth. Arrived at destination 1pm - first cast and I am loving the Emcast - smooth as silk and cast a mile. Got knee deep into the water and casted close to some reef structures and the Skippy's went wild. Pulled 4 out and kept 2 of 35cm / 40cm irrespectively, left for home after my handle (just above the fuji reel section) shattered at about 6pm. Got home - cut the damaged section away and refitted the blank to my newly altered 13ft Shimano 1468 Exage. (Hope my handy work does the trick)

Sunday morn up before dawn, took a stroll down to the beach with my richter plugs and spinning gear. After 30 minutes with no luck I moved onto location 2. Second cast and I hooked my first ever Tailor on a a richter lure. Nice shakes and a couple of heavy pulls and a great test for my repaired Okuma CJ55S and 2 min later she came out onto the beach. Loved the feel of the lure being smashed and absolutly stoked to have my mission accomplished this morn - "to catch a tailor on a richter lure" - (caught all my tailor and most of my fish in my lifetime with live or dead bait before converting now to lures.)

Good start to my 2 week fishing excursion in and around Perth as I send the missus and kids abroad for 2 weeks!!!!!!

Dumb question

Sun, 2011-09-25 09:56

Whiting for the Skippy. Are you talking small pieces on #2 hook? Or small slices on a small gang? Larger hooks? Paternoster astyle rig with sinker on the bottom?

Just asking coz I like to target skippy but have never had much success. I usually use blue sardines on a small gang and have caught a few.

Hey Pembo - 2 x 3' size hooks

Sun, 2011-09-25 10:47

Hey Pembo - 2 x 3' size hooks on a 40cm trace of .36mm (10kg) mono, I use both side fillets of the whiting tied off with stretch ghost nylon, paternoster style rig. I cast, and then slowly retrieve, stopping every 5mt or so. Small tugs followed by heavy pulls, heavy pulls start retrieving quickly, then the fun starts!

Thanks for the info

Sun, 2011-09-25 10:59

"2 x 3' size hooks "............  Sorry.... not sure what you mean.

I am sure you dont mean 3 foot hooks?? And I have never seen a size #3 hook (or am i just blind)........

Do you mean two sets of 3 gang hooks? or two 3/0 hooks?

Just interested. Sorry to be a pain.

P.S.: I also managed to get rid of the missus for the week. But ive still got the kids, so no fishing for the next week. Bummer.

No problem - I use two hooks

Sun, 2011-09-25 11:18

No problem - I use two hooks on my trace. Hook size 3/0 Mustad suicides - 1st hook is tied with a std bloodknot, second snelled. They are the Mustad ultra point so sharp hooks. Good luck for the week with the kids!

Hey Grant - South African

Sun, 2011-09-25 11:28

Hey Grant - South African made - stainless steel & flexiable - we use them in South Africa when targetting big Bronze Whalers / Ragged Tooth Sharks - and yes, the reason for the height is so that you could peg them in the shallow surf without getting your reel wet with your line over the breaking surf. Have'nt seen them around here.
