Scott reef trip

Hi guys so I'm planning a trip to scott reef either at the end of 2017 or for my 30th in a couple years and as I'm sure the rest of you guys would be to, I'm researching what gear I'm gonna buy for a popping outfit for general use but something that will handle a big GT and also a jigging outfit for hopefully doggies which is the real purpose for me coz it's been at the top of my list since the first time I saw one on a TV show when I was a kid...

thing is Iv never been gt fishing or thrown lures at big tuna or jigged for anything bigger than 40+ kg sambos so this whole trip is a bit of a grey area for me. So far with cost in mind Iv landed on Stella or twin power on fcl labo pop rod or maxel pop rod and for jigging I'm torn between overhead or spin... leaning towards overhead I was thinking of sticking with maxel. ( pretty big fan because of my hybrid 20c for dhuies jigging )

So what size reels and line class would you guys recommend and also some ideas of different gear I should be looking at?

Go Daiwa Dogfight in the largest reel you can afford. It's gonna be a dog fight, so the reel suits.

Talk to the charter guys that go to scott reef. Pretty sure reel teaser use dogfights for gt and doggies. Better book early if your going with Ross as he is just about booked out for 2017

 When I went there I had 3

Wed, 2016-12-28 16:02

When I went there I had 3 main outfits,

A saltiga 40ld on a 100lb rod with 100lb braid for trolling.

My jig rod was a saltiga dogfight 7000 with 130lb braid on a saltiga rod.

My popping rod was a saltiga exp 8000 with 130lb braid on a temple reef.

bring 50 or so jigs in the 100 - 200 gram range, heavy hooks and 130+lb leaders.

I lost a few stickbaits and poppers, some were destroyed beyond use.

x raps with upgraded hooks are dynamite on everything on the troll. I tried other brands but x raps were the standout.

You could use a saltiga 5500 exp for jigging, it would be a fair bit lighter to hang onto all day!

Your going to love it!

 I don't wanna start a shit

Wed, 2016-12-28 20:49

I don't wanna start a shit fight but Iv been off diawa since a bought a certate and it lasted less than 12 months

After more research it's gonna cost a shit load so I'll still go with 2 outfits I think but stick with bulletproof stuff... thinking maybe maxel transformer f70h on a transformer heavy jig rod and after 130 pound has been mentioned maybe 18000 twin power or Stella on a jm gt rod... In saying that Iv been looking all day and changed my mind a million times

what type of jigs? Iv got a full wallet of that weight range but it's my demersal stuff like lambles and currents and seven seas ect. Ps I love a fair fight so I'm not going to garentee that I catch that one speacial fish, I'm going to get smoked by that fish and have a 50/50 chance of landing it

the gear I use up here for

Wed, 2016-12-28 22:19

the gear I use up here for GT is a saltiga 6500 dogfight (a 14000 Stella will be fine) loaded with pe10 (I use varivas GT max) on a synit pe10 rod (but any good quality pe10 rod will do).  bring a few spare spools of line if your stressed but the reels will hold enough to deal with any GT that doesn't brick you. For heavy jigging I use a 20k Stella loaded with pe8 ( maybe for dogs go pe10) and pick a jig rod to suit.  I'm not sure you need the high gearing for the jigging and the extra winding power of low gear will be helpful....

Just my 2 cents :)

Ask Jason from ntwt.com.au as I'm sure he can give you some hints etc

I'm a Stella man, can't beat

I'm a Stella man, can't beat em and generally the choice reel for most GT and Doggy addicts. 18k for popping and 20k for jigging at remote reefs

Many quality topwater rods out there and no need to spend a motsa if your not going to Chase GT's regularly. Can get a reasonable rod for under $600 and some good secondhand rods can be found if you hunt around. Same with Jig rods.

For line at remote reefs like Scotts i use PE10 and PE12 for popping and PE8 for jigging. I don't bother going any lighter as even the trout and red bass at these spots will brick you with ease on PE6.

For leader go 150lb mono for jigging with a good 5-6m, for popping a rod length is fine and use 170-200lb mono.

One piece of advise is always take a back up popping rod and jig rod as you will no doubt do a guide or 2 or worse.  don't forget a spare spool of line or 2.

Happy to advsie further and help out anytime, can email me via my website or message me

Cheers
