Sea Charts the old paper ones

Where is the best place to get charts from? Either online or in store..
Have been looking at The chartandmapshop.com.au but can't see enogh detail in there maps to know I am Getting the right one.
I am chasing a map for use out of Gnarloo Station./ BAy.. Something that covers north and south by a couple hundred km each way..
If anyone has the codes/nMES for a suitable one let us know please....

If you have an i pad Chookc
you are better off downloading a nav app.For the same price as a laminated map you have the whole coast in far more detail.The days of paper maps are done and dusted.They dont show half the detail as lets say Navionics.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

I think you will find they show much the same bottom detail, or perhaps if there is more, then its merely extrapolated, as they're based on the same data.
Charts however will show full navigational and safety markers, and electronic charts don't.

If you look at paper charts they only show
One aspect no ability to zoom.The detail on the paper map i had is no where near the digital one.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

Yeah, but the detail after a point is made up, because they never charted them that close.
They only know what the levels are at certain points, and they guess that they're all lined up, and in some cases, where they run.
Just because you zoom up on a feature on a map, it doesn't mean it is there. I hear that the garmin maps are the worst for that out of what is presently available.

i am not disputing that
But a lot of what i have on my map program that isnt on the paper one is in fact there.The detail just isnt enough to warrant buying paper maps of one small area when for the price of one you can get the whole coast line.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

The Sanko Harvest was deemed human error.They had all the nav charts on board.Thats like saying the cruise liner that hit the island is because they should have checked a paper chart.Maybe Lucky Tim could shed some light on this one.I am sure they still consult paper charts but i would say a multi million dollar war ship would use their electronics more and more as it gets better.

Sanko harvest happened
Sanko harvest happened because they were relying on out of date and incomplete charts. Ships that big are required to keep up to date charts, and that one didn't. We're just lucky that in small vessels, we're not legally required to own them, or keep them up to date.
The Inspector concludes that the grounding of the Sanko Harvest was caused by:

You skipped over Point 7
then where it states human error.You can have all the maps in the world but if you take a shortcut and bottom out its human error.

I didn't skip point 7, but you're misinterpreting it.
The inspector cleary states in point 2, it was caused by lack of updated charts. and says further:
The grounding was caused by human failure alone. Neither the cargo, nor the
mechanical equipment, nor navigational equipment contributed to the incident;
The human error was to not update the chart. There was no navigational equipment failure that lead to the accident, ie: autopilot failure.

Chart shop
You can buy the chart from the Chart shop in Cilon Street Fremantle opposite Marine house.
The chart for Gnaraloo doesn't go in to fine detail and doesn't show the approaches in to the moorings, from memory it covers from Point Quobba through to Maud's landing north of Coral bay.
edit, the Dept of Transport office at Hillyarys marina also sell charts

The online chart shop got back to me first thing this morning and the chart for that area is AUS 747

Unfortunately not as techniclly adavanced to have an I anthying so will stck to the paper map. When all batteries fail there is still paper to see.. Unless at night

Well I learnt to navigate the
Well I learnt to navigate the old fashioned way - Sailing Background, Ocean Master - if use of charts was still a prerequisite or part of the RST there would be a much better understanding of the sea/tide/wind etc and a lot of mistakes/tragedys would be avoided IMO. Also would help most to fully understand the functionality of the chartplotter and what to do when it does not work..
In answer to the question though there are two good chart shops, one in Murray St Perth and one in Fremantle, however most of the chandler's can supply them

If you do a commercial ticket you must do chart work.
Its all right saying use echarts but try to work out set and drift etc on your screen!!!!

It's all too easy with GPS.
It's all too easy with GPS. What if it fails. I always line up landmarks for return navigation through reefs etc. I did a nav course a few years back with TAFE (not sure if they still do them) and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Paper chart with the douglas protractor plotting basic courses and learning how to read the hours ,minutes and seconds on different scale maps. It's a real heads up.
