Shark Bay in April
Submitted by wez0062 on Wed, 2017-03-22 07:12
Hi guys,
I am taking my boat to Denham on the 8th of April for what I hope will be a lifetime thrill of chasing fish & exploring the beautiful area on the water.
Will I be able to find fish easy enough ?
Do we have to run across to Dirk Hartog Island to find fish ?? I have a 22ft Fraser with a 200 ETECH so no worries about getting anywhere.
thanks in advance from a Shark Bay virgin

Hi wez, I will be up there
Hi wez, I will be up there on the 12/4 with the family for our annual trip can't wait. My parents live up there so hopefully we get some good weather to get out. The old man has a 7 metre and a little tinny and lately he has been leaving the big boat at home and just taking the tinny out by him self getting his bag limit he heads south of the ramp not far, old boy reckons there a some good Bombies and fish about 1km from shore in about 4m of water. If we take the big boat out we head to the bar flats for pinkies and blackies if you can get past the sharks and blowies other than that we head to dirk hartog shallows and get coral trout, bold chin, estuary cod and all sorts good variety there. I will say g'day if I see you at the ramp

Although I haven't fished
Although I haven't fished there for a while we would head to turtle bay. lots of ground around there and all sorts of fish. even within 1-2 km of the bay itself
don't have to be in deep water for good fish and have caught pinkies over the 1m mark in 15m water.
turtle bay is a long trip and we would cover around 100NM in a day.

TURTLE BAY
thanks mate, that's a long trip.
Not sure about fuel, as I only have a 120lt fuel tank with a 200 ETECH pushing my boat. with 2 x 25lt jerry cans of fuel, do I have enough to get to Dirk hartog Island & back, comfortably ??

wez0062,I'll be up there from
wez0062,
I'll be up there from 9th April until the 28th and staying at "Sea Breeze" which is in the same street as you, Hartog Crescent.
Boat is a red 6.7 metre Coraline Walkaround.
We have fished there quite a few times and you are more than welcome to accompany us any time you like.
Not Shark Bay experts by any stretch, but we always come home with plenty of quality fillets.
We usually leave the ramp very early to beat the traffic and when doing trips to Turtle Bay and Steep Point we usually do an overnighter and come back the following day. Saves a lot of time and fuel.
Still undecided if we will do Turtle Bay this time, the fishing was awesome but the sharks were out of control last time we were there, will see what the locals reckon.
Not sure what your boat is like on fuel, but if you are going to fish inside Denham Sound or over Monkey Mia side I expect you will be OK
If you want to try out from Steep Point or Turtle Bay, It might pay get hold of another couple of jerry cans just to be on the safe side.
My tank is 170 litres and I carry 3 x 20 litre jerries on the marlin board for emergencies but have never had to use them.
Recommend you get yourself a load of soft plastics and jig heads, they are very effective up there, and loads of fun.
We get our bait from the "Fish Factory" up the top end of town, whiting heads, and they work a treat. Were $7 for enough for a couple of days fishing but I believe they are now $10....bloody inflation !
Hope to see you there................................

hi mate,
thanks heaps for the info, I will look you up for sure. Probably be busy unloading our boats & buses at the same time, what fun that will be. Just really hoping to catch a few quality fish & have some fun while doing it. Will grab an extra jerry can or 2 for sure.
I was planning on mainly fishing with bait as I have not done anything with soft plastics in the past, but will surely grab some.
Thanks also for the heads up on the bait supply, I will def be calling in

I expected you would be
I expected you would be staying ay Monkey Mia Randell, I've noticed it is a yearly event for you and your family.
Will keep and eye out for you, we usually do a couple of trips out from that side.
