Sharks

For all the land based shark fisho's out there i have a question for you! Just wanting to know do people get more hook ups on balloon or bottom baits?

Reason i ask is im heading to a spot this saturday and it is possible to balloon there, although it isn't extremely deep. Would it be worth going somewhere off the beach with some chop and a little deeper having bottom baits out? (obviously means we wont get the bait out as far and wont be able to use such big baits and heavy long rigs as the balloons)

Can't make up my mind which option would be best

Balloons

Using a balloon will keep your bait out of reach of stingrays other than that no difference but you will need an easterly to get it out and that cannot always be guaranteed.

Yeah I guess that is the benefit of balloons, just thought there might be more percentage of sharks which feed in the top or the water column or bottom? Depends where you are I can balloon pretty well on easterly, southerly, South West, North just not west

I got my last big ray on a balloon  and I also caught a ray on my first ballooning attempt and that balloon was about 600mtrs of the beach.Hungry big bastards wont stay on the bottom.

i have had a ray take a balooned bait, and my mate had it happen to him the weekend just gone it does help reduce ray hook up though, just gets ya so much more excited when you get a hook up only to be let down when you get it to the beach haha

sorry to pirate ya thread, but what if you didnt have an easterly wind so paddled a bottom rig out, one with a long dropper to the sinker.

Anyone tried this?

yeah i have done this before spanishmackeral! ill be testing it out this weekend anyways see what gets more hits balloons or bottom baits. I know rays are a pain in the ass, taking good baits. I find if you have a live bait like a herring or tailor on bottom less chance of rays also..

Wont be getting spooled no more 80 pound brad on fin nor offshore 9500 27 kg full drag :)
