Shift function on furuno sounder?
Submitted by black gen on Wed, 2014-06-25 20:51
Might seem like a silly question,
But I've noticed people talking about it on here and also seen people's sounder pics of when they use the shift function on their furuno and have the depth set to say the bottom 20m of the water column or the bottom 40m
Question is how do you do this? Ive had a play around with mine but cant suss it out
im sure its really easy if someone would be so kind as to point me in the right direction
thanks alot

Settings
In the settings you can program the function button to be the shift.
Do that and then when you press it and adjust the shift depth the sounder screen will start from that depth.

without going out into the
without going out into the cold to have a look at my 620, I think its in the menu section not on the front with its own button.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.

Black gen I struggled like you
with the shift function. In my mind the Furuno manual is not particularly clear in its presentation of how to operate the shift function. My perception from the manual was that if I set the shift function at say 30m I would see the bottom 30m on the screen (as in a 30m window from the bottom up). Finally I realised that if I set the shift function to 30m the screen would show depths below 30m and nothing above. Similarly set the shift function to 100m and the screen will show the depths below 100m and nothing above. This just elaborates a little on what Tim wrote. Like everything in life, it's easy when you know.

Correct
Correct Alan. You then use your range to show the amount of water column you want.
20 shift with 20m range will show the area between 20m and 40m. Perfect for when you are in 35m of water

I think of it like this. Say I'm in about 50 metres and I only want to be looking at the bottom 10. FIRST I would set my range to 10, I will not see the bottom on my screen. Then I keep adding shift until the bottom comes back into view, in this case there will be about 40 metres of shift required.

ive just got a 627 and also want to try the manual shift
im guessing bottom descrimination etc have to be turned off?
so in summary if i have this correct
1 Menu
2 system
3 then there should be an option of Shift in there
Alan - you stated something about range, basically i would like to see the bottom 20 metres on the right screen and bottom lock on the left half.
if you fellahs had any screen shots of the options would be great.

Just recently used the new settings on my 585 at Gnaraloo Dan. Bottom lock is awesome and setting the the range to the right depth gives a good view at where you optimaly want to fish.

But when using this feature
You cannot dim the brightness of the screen - it seems to be one or the other, the moment you seek to change the depth the unit is looking at the screen reverts to full brightness which is a real pain when travelling at night
Have anyone encountered this problem and is there a way around it as I much much prefer to purely look at the bottom ten or so metres rather than the whole water column ??

yep thats exactly what i want
yep thats exactly what i want to do Andy, concentreate more on the small lumps holding fish - so bottom 10 - 20 metres should show this alot more clearly.
just getting the time to find the right settings.

Dant I am no expert on sounders but since you asked the following may help. Look the pic below that I have copied from another thread. I think this is a good example of the Shift function. You can see the Shift function is set to 280m and that the screen shows the water column deeper than 280m. If you were to adjust the Shift function to say 320m you would only see the water column deeper than 320m and so forth.
In the pic you can see a 100m deep water column that being from 280m to 380m. This 100m water column can be adjusted by the Range key. If you were to push the Range + key this would increase the depth of the water column to 200m. Then you would see the water column between 280m and 480m. Conversely if you pressed the Range - key this would reduce the depth of the water column on the screen to 50m so you would see the depths between 280m and 330m.
You have indicated that you want to see the lower 20m window. If you were say in 80m and you set the Shift to 60m then you would see the water column from 60m down so there is your 20m window. Hope this helps.

So they've got range at 50m,
So they've got range at 50m, ( The difference between top of screen and bottom of screen), 20 metre shift. ( depth at top of screen )
Bottom lock with 5 metre range
