Shimano Reels

Hey guys,

Just wanting a few opinions on a new reel to purchase. Basically at the moment i have a shimano baitrunner 6000D that i use for all my beach fishing. The last two times i have been to "Spot x" i have been spooled one was definately a big shark and the other took 300 meters in 60 seconds flat banging head shakes.

The only way i can see around this from getting spooled is upgrading to a bigger reel size. Just wondering what reel i should get out of the shimano range spending a max of $250. Wanting it to hold around 400 meters of 40-50 pound braid and at the same time having a good drag pressure? And definitely a spinning reel! I have two overheads already. Need this for casting baits into the surf..

If anyone has any idea's on what i should get please post, would be much appreciated! Reason i am sticking with shimano is because they have been so reliable and durable!

Cheers!

Fin Nor

For a cheap, bullet proof reel that holds a sh!t load of braid, try a Fin Nor Offshore. You can pick them up from $150 to $200 and sizes from 3500 to 9000.

I have a few of them now, they are heavy but cant fault them, 30lb of drag. 2 weeks at steep point with one didn't even put a scratch on it .

Jesus i just took a look at

Jesus i just took a look at the specs of those reels, for that price they are unbeatable! that is the type of reel i am looking for! i mean 25 kgs of drag pressure and says it can hold 430 meters of 65 pound braid.. ill be using 50 pound.

Whats the structure of the reel like as far as the roller part of the bail arm where the line goes through, reason i ask i have had problems with the penn reels in the past where they come loose and the braid can get wedged in between the roller = busting off or tearing the braid.

If its solid i think we have a winner! thanks alot of that appreciate your response grant! just the type of drag pressure, line capacity and price i am looking for 3 birds 1 stone :)

Roller

Wed, 2013-02-20 00:16

Roller is as solid as they get , I read a review before i bought one were they guy used the 8000 on a pro kingfishing boat in NZ. He used it for 12 months on full lock drag and landed over 150 kingies on it without a service. He had many other expensive reels that he had to service and repair during the same period.

I put nearly 500m of 30lb braid on my 5500, and 300m of 80lb on my 9000. I do think they over estimate line capacity on thier site but it depends on the brand of braid .

As i said they are a bit heavy and you dont want to be casting all day long with lures , but ideal for casting a big bait out and sitting back waiting for that big run .

I use mine on the boat and from shore, and plenty fisho's use them for jigging sambo's etc .

I dont own one of those

I dont own one of those reels, but have seen one in action. On a trip I did last year there was a guy using one to pop for GTs. I had my doubts it would hold up but he must have landed 20 GTs in the 15-25kg range with it and it still held together (albeit it was a bit more clunky than when he started!)

So given the price, probably not a bad option.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Go get the new Penn SSM V 10000

Wed, 2013-02-20 16:48

For $180 you would be hard pressed to beat the new Penn 10000 SSM V ........... I could go on about how good an Alvey Surf Champion would be, but you are asking about egg beaters.

Go the new Penn , its waterproof and has huge drag systems, come in live liner model as well.

Shimano Saragosa

Wed, 2013-02-20 21:52

Can pick up for 250 on special, I have a 14F.25kg drag pressure, not sure on capacity but I have 300 m of 80 lb braid and 100 or so meters of 30 lb backing. Hooked plenty of big sharks and they come quickly!

Thanks so much for the input

Wed, 2013-02-20 22:33

Thanks so much for the input guys really appreciate it! just by doing a bit of research and being short on cash at the moment think im going to go with the Fin-Nor OFS reel. Weighs a little more then most of the other reels mentioned but for what i am using it for basically casting baits out and leavin it, suits the use extremely well.

I would love to go for the saragosa, but little bit up market for me at the moment! great reels though have seen some in action on numerous occasions. Basically looks like i will be able to spool it with about 500 meters of 50 pound braid which will stop virtually anything.

Any thoughts on purchasing one from the states off ebay? they seem very well priced just looking at the cheapest way so that i can still afford 500 meters of braid to go on top (probably cost the same as the bloody reel!)

For that priced reel

For that priced reel , i would just buy one local, one of the site sponsers will help you out and you will get a warranty as well.

The Saragosa is a great reel for the price too, but on the budget you have , Penn or Fin Nor would not let you down .

Got one today they were going

Thu, 2013-02-21 20:18

Got one today they were going for $149 and spooled it basically with 400 meters of 80 pound braid. Hopefully that will fix the little pricks from spooling me. Very heavy reel but jeez it looks awesome and strong, as the guys said basically an industrial type reel!

Youll do well to get a penn

Sat, 2013-02-23 21:19

Youll do well to get a penn ssv mate. The newest reels added to the penn range and around 200 bucks. Huge amount of drag and torque, full metal body and smooth too. They Just brought out 10500 size which is an absolute monster of a fishing reel but your sure to find the size your after. Saragosa is also a beast of a reel, stacks of drag and worm drive system. Just a bit more expensive.

Penn Spinfisher V

Mon, 2013-02-25 01:20

I would say get the Shimano Saragosa, However your budget is more suited to a Penn Spinfisher V series.

These new reels have an incredable drag that can rival the $1000 Shimano Stella and they come in some huge sizes. They Retail for $199 and you would have $50 left over for some nice yellow braid.

Might be worth having a look at one.
