Listen to the teacher and it might help with your grammar / spelling. Wink

"am at school in english on the laptops or should i stay on please tell me i dont no what 2 dooo"

Try...

I am at school in English, on one of the laptops. Should I stay on? Please tell me, I don't know what to do."

Whilst I am at it...

FORCED rather than FORECED

Mitch how about you write a story for the Reeltime Mag, if we publish it and you maybe get an "A" in English as a result.

A great way to combine the two. Wink

We are all just jealous

Thu, 2009-10-22 13:48

We never had laptops in my day, come to think of it, a computer was something that took up a whole room and computer programming was done by punching holes in cards and feeding them through a huge machine.

"Miniwaft" was what they called it from memory. Anyone else do that in school in the 70's?

Ouch

Thu, 2009-10-22 16:10

And back in those days the word "lush" was defined as:

  • Having or characterized by luxuriant vegetation
  • Abundant; plentiful.
  • Extremely productive; thriving

These days its slang for

  • great; amazing. Shortened form of luscious. I loved that dhuie fight, it was lush.

    high quality. (British)

  • That Stella 5000 you're holding is lush!

Oh how times change.... bring back "Mintox" I say.

Thu, 2009-10-22 16:50

I can remember using punch-card to program the old main-frame computer at university of Cape Town.... bloody things would jamb half way through a program load-up and having to reshuffle the bloody lot.
we still did FORTRAN, Cobalt, C and C-plus, Basic and some others back in those days. When programing involved writing real code and not cut-pasting like these so called Microsoft Service Engineers do these days...lol
I remember seeing the big Wang computer back at Shell's Africa head-office for the first time in 1980 and standing in awe at this room that was machines guts..... today my mobile phone has more processing power.

oh well back to school you young guns

Pretty much anyone younger than me probably had comps all the way thru school. We had a microbee in primary school, but nothing at high school. A few of my pals had the old c64 at home, my parents had an XT, but the first comp of my own was a low end pentium for autocad and quake.

Thu, 2009-10-22 20:08

people should really learn to spell and write correctly, it takes longer to read the texting shorthand.  plus your english will actually improve if you use it properly.

Grammar obviously

Sat, 2009-10-24 19:34

still means something judging from the posts on a thread started by a student. Like a few of you posting, i left school at 14 and conned my way into a job working on the building of the railway to Newman. I was lucky to have a mother who accepted i was a crap student and encouraged me to read. Hence i have a far better vocabulary and concept of correct grammar than my wife ( MBA) and my daughter (PHD). I still don't know much about Einstein but i can spell his name and i have a job - but not as a truckie as double declutching beat me.

spelt

Mon, 2009-10-26 06:36

The word spelt was spelled correctly but its use in the sentence as written probably wasn't.Smile

Most forumites would be reading this forum on a computer and, although fashionable to use "texting" slang or abbreviations, it can make the message unreadable.

Fishing (& anything to do with it) always has a time factor involved and shouldn't be rushed. You have plenty of time to type out the full word.

Edit: And then I did the same thing..... the word spelt is spelled correctly....

At least if I "texted" (is this even a word?) I would use spelt and wouldn't have to worry.

Is LOL Lots of Laughs or Lots of Luck ? in letters (snail mail for the young ones) LOL after the signature use to mean "Lots of Luck" or "Lots of Love" so in texting the target recipient needs to know how old you are just to interpret what you sent.

Hard on us old blokes.....
