Knots

Assuming u using mono as a main line - these are the only knots I'll use ...
If u using a wind on leader do a Bimini in your main line and join onto the leader with a cats paw knot.
If u tying on your own leaders do a Bimini in your main line and join onto your leader with double figure of 8 .

I've always tried to do a Bimini in the mono but always end up damaging the line so I use the Aussie plait and never had a problem with any of my rigs failing there. As mentioned join that to a wind on leader with a cats paw. I always use the rovex 10m long wind on leaders and they are very cheap and hold up well to reef and big sharks skin and the extra length help a lot with landing them on the beach and extra protection if you get a tail wrapped shark.

Thanks for that Chris I've also never been able to tie a bimini without damaging the line so never bothered with wind on's but the Aussie plait looks much more doable

I go with the bimini, took ages to get it in heavy mono but it is doable without burning the line or damaging it

But what is a twist on leader?  I have seen them in the shops but could never figure out what they are for.

how do they differ from a normal wire or heavy mono leader?

Wind on leaders don't have a knot and just have a Dacron loop at the end so because of this you can cast up to a 200lb leader without a big bulky knot catching on the guides.

So you just tie your main line to the loop?

Do people use them for 100lb ish leader over a Aussie braid?

thanks

Backing

Thu, 2013-01-17 19:00

Iv Never used mono as backing , it's always braid as backing and a mono top shot , but I would imagine the knot should be the same , again I use a Bimini on both the braid and mono and join them with the cats paw . It's never failed me and I've had some big triple digit fish on the line with a few hundred meters of braid out there ....
