Snook - Fines- Eating

I was talking to a guy at Dawesville the other night and he had been done by fisheries for 7 undersize Snook, he was very embarrassed as he didnt realise they had size limit. He was told by fisheries that it would be a $100.00 - $120.00  but they didnt specify if this was in total or per fish. Does any one know how the fine system works?.

He said that he eats the Snook he catches which surprised me as I was under the impression they werent very good to eat so I guess my second question is has anyone else tried eating them and are they Ok?.

Never seen a snook in metro waters

Mon, 2012-02-20 13:07

Plenty of sea pike but nothing like the snook we used to catch in SA .........and the snook were really good eating.  I have to admit that I have used what I call pike as bait but I was sure whilst they might be a relative they were not baby snook - colouration entirely different ??

Snook/Pike

Mon, 2012-02-20 13:54

Heaps of big Pike in Winter in the metro area. Drift along the weed areas close to shore with a unweighted mullie with a good burley trail and you will get them.

Colour depends on the weed colour they are in normally.

Cought heaps of snook/pike north of mindarie over the years.

They are ok to eat.

fines

Mon, 2012-02-20 15:04

Have heard for fishery offences they can fine you for the offence itself ie, over bag limit, too small a size

and then for a additional fine of 10x the market value of the fish, ie 1 10kg dhu over bag limit

200 bucks for first offence plus 10x say $50 a kg, = 200+500=$700 fine, just a made up example

they can also confiscate gear, boats etc depending on the offence.

may seem harsh , but lets face it , if the fine for a 10kg dhu was 50 bucks , people would just take it and

even if caught would still be happy.

The only ones I dont like to see are the mum and dad once a year fishos being done for a couple of undersize crabs,

in these cases , with no prior offences , education and a warning would be better, I think , just a opinion.

Have to agree

Mon, 2012-02-20 17:07

I have to agree with ya, kind of. I'm all for making it a persons responsibility to know the rules when they undertake a fishing activity (or any activity that has regs attached). However there is always going to be the Mum and Dad case where people just having fun with their family and are oblivious to the rules. Lets be honest, it's not as if the rules are readily available. The government/reglatory bodys don't publise the rules often (if ever) in the paper or on TV. Sure they are available if you want to look hard enough, but as you often see on this discussion database even some rules seem to be open to interpretation (unless you're the guys that wrote them). A once a week advert on all TV channels stating that people should be aware of the rules prior to going fishing/crabbing/diving would go a long way to increasing public awareness and increasing the longterm sustainability of WA Fisheries. not what I said

Mon, 2012-02-20 19:50

Agreed jighead, but I never said its a excuse , simply a better way of dealing with the issue.( once someones been caught)

whats the difference between most of us now, and the freezer fillers and rape and plunders of yesteryear?

Education, in my opinion, thats why W.A does have a great run ( not perfect ) rec fishery. We all have learnt so much more than

the people before us, and we take it on ourselves most of the time to fish substainaly.

You cant have a fisheries officer looking over every anglers shoulder, so by explaining to the mum and dad fishers WHY

undersize and over bag hurts the fishery , rather than blanket fining, the education continues.

look forward to your ( and everyones response) hey Im hijacking again , apoliges to the poster

Sea pike = terrible

Snook = quite edible. They smell a bit Barracuda'ish but taste quite good, but better fish in the ocean.

We have got them regularly over 80 cm on the 3 mile, most released.
