Some fishing lately

Hey guys, ive noticed the reports are a bit slow today and im tired of refreshing the site waiting for new posts so thought i might upload some photos of some fish ive been getting into this month.

A couple of firsts for me include the black bream on plastics, Ive only just started fishing the river in the last month as its a great way to spend a Sunday arvo, nice and relaxing.

The sandy on plastics also a first. With the weather extremely warm and a couple days off for Aus Day and the friday, my mates and I spent the glassy mornings out on the jetskis having a ball skiing, thats when i noticed the schools of solid yellowfin cruising the shallows. I came back in the arvo with the rod and a pack of plastics, sight casted to a school of yellowfin and one sucked it in and ran with it, pulled the hook out on the strike and it turned around and smashed the plastic again, then i lost it haha was actually suprised at how aggressive they are.

Big skippy in the bucket went 45cms, most of them caught on 4in plastics.

The big tailor went 58cms, the smallest we caught that session was 43cm, casting stickbaits into washy reefs from the ski, not a bad size for metro. The stickbaits we used are supposed to be bream lures, Starlo Pro bream stix or something, we just change the trebbles to larger ones and they work a treat, as the photos show.

The big skippy and tailor haul was from a session I had with flangies and leemo which turned out to be one of the hottest metro landbased sessions we've ever had.

Cheers guys

Great effort

Great effort & thanks for the photos. Always love photos in a post.

Skippy is something I would like to start targeting. Only ever caught small ones as a bycatch whilst fishing for whiting. How do you target them specifically? What kind of baits and rigs (if you dont mind me asking). Paternoster with bluebait? Or half a mulie on a double gang of 2/0 hooks. Thats how I would try. Any input woulf ber appreciated.

Thanks

Yep spot on leemo, I know we chucked any skippy back that were under 30cms. All the fish on the green tub were taken on mullies on a set of gangs by one of the locals down there, while all the fish on the floor were taken on plastics, hardbodies and live grasshopper haha! I've found areas with structure with a fair bit of water movement seem to hold the skippy, like bridge pylons and rock groynes

I havent caught metro skippy in ages!

Not asking for secret spots, but what general areas are they pretty common?  I fish a lot of rock grynes and bridge areas SOR and NOR but never come across them.

The best time to fish for

Mon, 2012-01-30 15:58

The best time to fish for skippy is when the moon is setting,, say mid mornin, 10 minutes before it is about to set is when the action will be its hottest, soft plastics are good but if ur fishin where there arnt to many pickers, use squid for bait, ther faviroute food,

Skippy are perhaps the easiest fish to target. Good burley trail and squid on either a single hook with running ball sinker, 4" jerk minnow plastics ( pink snapbacks are great), or just a good ole paternoster rig. I quite regularly get massive hauls.  Great fun getting 50cm skippy on bream gear.

I usually hit up centaur reef around a few lumps and do very well.

Hey Justo, I've never fished Centaur reef, is it safe to posi up right over it, or do you sit off it a bit ?
