South Passage Tantabiddi

Can anyone share their experience of navigating South passage to and from the ramp. I have seen plenty of boats much bigger than mine which is a 6 mtr ali run inside the reef then out through the passage. I have all the latest electronics on board but have always hesitated at running through there as I dont have the local knowlwdge. Is there any real trick to is, what is the lowest water you can do it on or is it just a case of slow ahead and watch the map / sounder. Ripping the arse out of the boat would put a real damper on my annual run
Any local knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Some people will tell you 1
Some people will tell you 1 way while others swear that their way is the best. Your best bet is to follow a charter boat in or out as "word of mouth" directions can sometimes be time consuming and very costly as there'sbombies everywhere

for a while,
we feared this passage, but once we followed a charter boat through there at low tide, we realised how easy it actually is.
you do have to watch out for bommies on the inside of the reef, and at the actual passge, there is a nasty bommie that is almost dead centre of the passage, but it is actually quite easy. you will have to keep a very close eye on the swell and the plotter at the same time.

Good advice. The boys on on
Good advice. The boys on on strike fly through there and I havnt been able to stay with them. Best bet would be the whale shark boats I guess. I hope they dont get pissed of with me if I tuck in behind them.

route
take your time on a nice flat clear day when you can see all the bombies and make your way down to south passage marking any bombies that could pose a threat onto your plotter and then mark a route thru them all on your return to the ramp. The passage itself is pretty good beside the large bombie sitting dead centre like scotto mentioned but you can generally see this one no dramas. Keep an eye on the swell and good luck!

I can't see why they would
All you are doing is getting the clues on how to get through south passage safely. It's not like you are going out to find the best spot for whale sharks to catch one or do it some harm.
I've come across some charter operators who go out of their way to be helpful, and then unfortunately you will come across one who would cut of his nose to spite his face. Luckily they are few and far between these days.

To easy
On high tide you will be sweet but still keep an eye out the water is pretty clear so just follow the sand passages and dodge the bomies, kerp an eye on ur plotter for depths and bomies

nth passage
having been in n out of there w a charter boat quite few times it might just be easier to run straight out of nth passage mate. No mucking round no stressing about not enough water under you which can be a huge drama on outgoing tide.
Just go nth passage n run dwn on outside of the reef. Awsome GT fishing justinside nth passage aswellI

Have done North passage many
Have done North passage many times without a drama. I got caught out last year running north for the ramp on the outside with a big following sea and getting dark after staying for that "one more", rookie mistake I know. Was getting the daggers from the Mrs. Would like to have a plot through South passage as a back up as I have seen plenty of the lads do it and it looked a better option given the conditions on the outside. Might just tag along behind one of the local lads who seem pretty chilled and easy going.
