spaniard wire trace?

hey guys ive been using 50lb 7 strand wire for spaniards because thats all dad has in the tackle box. and im looking at getting some more for trolling the metro macks.

what strand and breaking strain?

some brands better than others?

coated or uncoated?

is it all stainless steel?

also do you go heavier when you go north?(heading to shark bay in april)

and would a cobia or tuna still take a wired lure?

thanks in advanced, Rob

single strand wire

Get a couple of packets of pre straightened single strand wire and learn how to perfect the haywire twist, its cheap and very durable.I normally get either masons, superflex or whatever. I use 69lb for spinning and say 124lb for ballooning/trolling,and it's light enough in weight not to affect the action of your lures/baits etc.

yeah, just run single strand

yeah, just run single strand piano wire. Split ring to swivel on tow point & haywire twist at both ends. Run about 15-20cm.

Single Strand Wire

Sun, 2011-01-09 23:10

We use about 800mm of Superflex single strand 88lb or 105lb S/S wire but still use a wind on leader ie 100lb.

Thats same wire is fine for local & upnorth fish, as for tuna/cobia its better to run wire as they wont be put off and in the same waters you find macks so "wire" up.

800mm of single strand? That

800mm of single strand? That seems a lot. Each to their own I suppose, but would result in plenty of 'kinks's'.

Single strand is the go

Mon, 2011-01-10 06:34

I run it straight to the tow point on the lure. You take the split ring off as it can work against you(the wire can at times run around the ring and all you get back is the wire)I run about a foot or so of wire then a crane swivel on the terminal end.Have been doing that for years in gamex ect and never had an issue apart from going to low in line class at the wrong time.

when up north and burling, use 100lb mono and gangs of hooks, sometimes the macks don't like wire, will lose a few but will get far more strikes and fish

sweet so tying a double in

Mon, 2011-01-10 09:14

sweet so tying a double in the braid and using 100lb wind on leader would be good? whats the best tutorial on how to tie a bimini twist.(some ive found are a bit confusing) and i will use about 120lb of single strand. is it easier to tie it yourself because ive heard of the afw haywire twist tool, anyone used it?

haywire isnt too hard to tie,

Mon, 2011-01-10 09:18

haywire isnt too hard to tie, like any knot requires practice. Main issue is breaking the wire off neatly. Its easier to get someone to show you the bimini if you dont get the tutorials. A site sponsor will gladly show it to you.

length of wire.

Tue, 2011-01-11 12:27

Just recently Ryan was in the shop making up spanish mackerel wire traces for his trip out to Rotto soon and I did ask about longer trace versus shorter.

He said longer single strand wire is better as you do get it kinked up after some mackerel hits and when you cant rebend it you just cut off the damaged bit and re do the haywire. If its short you cant do that and he also said try to get the swivel or connection point away from the lure so other mackerel dont bite it.

Basic logic says that a long trace is always going to kink more

Tue, 2011-01-11 13:02

That and the fact that if you troll fish rich waters that the swivel is to far away from the lure and creates a bow wave of its own and that is a problem in its self as it gets hit by another fish and it is all over.It will take almost as long to shorten it down as it takes to put another on.Of course Ryan knows his stuffHey spanishmackeral how about this for an idea try both and then let us know which one is best. You could also pm Dodgy or Uncle ect that fish north alot and see what they have to sayMy guess is they run short single strand for gamex and the like.I could be wrong of course.

sounds good! what do you mean by getting the swivel or connection point away from the lure? also what lb and brand wire did ryan get? (ryan of fwa show?) if so that means we can expect a show on metro macks

105lb

Tue, 2011-01-11 12:54

Ryan grabbed 105lb Superflex i think, he uses a ballbearing swivel on the single strand and connects his windon leader to that swivel. Ryan did say he's done a show on trolling for mackerel upnorth showing how to rig up and do the haywire twist etc. Dont hold me to this but that show is on in a months time? He is just doing his own fishing for local mackerel - bit of r & r

wire

Tue, 2011-01-11 17:14

I mentioned the thread, Ryan said length of wire has no bearing on kinking, its the mackerel bites and fighting damage that can happen to the wire.

Going heavier will minimise kinkage but wire will always suffer some damage hense the longer the better to re-do but each to their own.

The swivel he uses is a very small ballbearing version so bubble trail isnt a problem especially on the deepdivers.

He's going to get me out their soon now filming is all over so I can experience more of the trolling which will be good.

just a question , but has

Tue, 2011-01-11 21:35

just a question , but has everyone tried trolling for macks without the wire trace??

i heard a school of thought that running leader straight through to swivel to split to lure without wire  and hence without the swivel / bubble trail from swivel , would result in more hit's and hits from other wire shy fish too (tuna)

i fished abrolhos a couple of years back and being new to the boat fishing game , rigged as such.

suffered no bite offs, maybe luckily!

I think the hype about hooking a metro macky results in people not taking any risks.

that's prob the case daz. i went out numerous times last season for a mack around rotto and 3 mile but no luck. (was running wire)

this season i'll try running half with wire and the others (cheapy's) , none.

hoping for a blinding mack season this year and hopefully my first metro fish.
