Spares on the road

 Hi all,

Third times a charm and I'm finally transporting my big boat from C'von to its new home at Flying Fish Point just south of Cairns.

15 miles to the Great Barrier Reef......

Enough of that shit.

Anyhow I'm compiling a list of bits an pieces I'm going to be needing for the ( slooooow )  5700k journey.

A sense of humor is essential!.

Trailer is brand spanking new so there should be no issues here. I'll organize some spare bearings and grease as an insurance policy.

So far I've got a spare starter motor, alternator, hoses and belts for the truck. Plenty of coolant and oil, fuses etc, etc. If it's any job bigger than this then it's going to be out of my skill set.

1/2 inch socket set

Big hammer, assorted screwdrivers, pliers, side cutters, hacksaw, big shifters, multimeter, box cutter knife, electrical tape, cable ties and some good old fencing wire.

What have I forgotten and what else would you pack?.

Yes, the bimini will be coming off for transport!.

I've got one in the cruiser will pack it. Didn't even think of that one, all the tyres are brand new and the last thing I want to do is kill one. The truck has a big long air lead with a hand piece for running off the air tank.
Just thought of a block to roll onto for changing rear outers without using a Jack.

Bearings

Thu, 2022-03-17 10:45

Just because it's a brand new trailer, don't assume the bearings are well greased. Always good to at least pull the hubs off and eyeball things.

We plan to camp in the boat on the way over. There's a full kitchen, bbq on the back deck, pressurized hot and cold water, shower, lounge, three beds and a uuuuuge fridge and freezer. We won't be slumming it that's for sure!.

Noted all the above ideas, ground mat and checking the bearings for sure.

All going to plan I should be helping deliver a 44ft yacht across the top end in June, that will tick off the Derby leg Rob!.

Thu, 2022-03-17 14:04

I would be making sure you have enough spare tyres for the truck AND the trailer. it looks like you will have room in the truck for them. Hot roads can cause tyre blowouts and tyre plugs cant fix them!! The companyt I work for transports heavy machinery to the northwest occasionally and we allow for 1 blowout every 500- 1000 km. doesnt always happen, but thet seems to be the average for the hot roads and the heavy loads. Some big distances between tyre shops across the top end...

Also think about getting an impact socket to undo/ do up the wheel nuts. easier by air/ battery than by armstong power!!

Thu, 2022-03-17 15:08

Maybe a jump starter in case you have battery issues. I've got one that cost $350 from iTechworld that can start my 8.2L V8 in the boat. Can also run 12V devices so a good power back-up.

She's an oldie but a goodie. We'll be cruising between 70-80, pretty hard to bust stuff when you're tootling along. No real rush to get there, just want to get there in one piece!.

 That is a great one.

When we did our broome trip, there was a road house in the middle of nowhere that had no internet and therefore no eftpos - it was cash only. We had $20 on us which was to pay the honesty box for the next nights sleep.

Thanksfully we had half a tank (70l) and didnt need fuel (I was going for a tactical fill) but didnt need it. There were lots of cars stopped off the side, assumably low on fuel with having to sell watches ect to get to the next spot.

If ur using the boat to cook

Thu, 2022-03-17 21:06

If ur using the boat to cook and sleep, you may need a battery charger if no Anderson setup.

A punch, in case you have to replace bearing races

Cordless impact driver

Ratchet straps

Multi grips

Leather Gloves

Preen stain remover (it's the best hand cleaner)

I did Perth Port Hedland Perth via exxy in 1 week towing the boat  (5000ks) and I needed most of the above, above the usual tools. Did 2 tyres and 1 hub.

I reckon

Thu, 2022-03-17 22:35

Cordless drill and drill bits

cordless angle grinder with cutting and grinding disc's

lastly, it might seem like overkill, but get yourself a cheap portable arc welder. You can get little 10 amp ones for about $150 -$200 nowadays. Either that or a good set of jumper leads and 2x 12v batteries and you can do roadside welding with that (plenty on YouTube on that). An arc welder and a few welding rods in the middle of nowhere can come in very handy!!

laslty, some devcon / quick steel always comes in hand in emergency repairs

That’s what I was thinking!.

Fri, 2022-03-18 14:50

Need to be as light as possible, then again maybe I should have left the 16kva generator in the back of the truck.

The only large item that's going to be in the truck is a spare Verado, the rest is mainly going to tools.

I had a nut weld onto the hub.....that would have been handy.  As it was we tried for too long and stripped the nut and had to have it cut off with an oxy set.

I did the drive Christmas 2020 in a 100 series Sahara and it was interesting. The roads were sweet until we hit the NT border... The run from the border to Katherine was poo to say the least, skinny road with a foot drop off on the side nowhere to go.  That poo status was classified pretty good until you hit the Qld border then it turns to beyond shit. If we make it out the other side I one piece I'll be beyond happy.

 Evening Fox,

Sounds like the lads have you plenty organised...

Perhaps a dishwasher if you are travelling solo??

Also now the footy season has started I could send you the back to back to back dvds as a bit of light entertainment in the evenings after a hard day on the rd...

If I can get it organised I'll get Simo to sign the 2015 disc before I post it.

On a more serious note....

I would certainly be checking/re-packing the bearings on said new trailer myself as that could very well be the weakest link...

Safe travels buddy...
