Cheers

Have speared squid with a gidgee before. Tends to separate the head from body on the spears impact.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Whacked a few this year when we felt like doing something different, you normally run into some good KGW in the same areas too. Shiny mackerel skin is a pretty good way of getting the attention of any close by. Much easier with a pranger and they dont get off.

When i first started
When i first started squidding i asked the same question as i was keen to get some on spear but then relised theres no point to it. They are in good numbers pretty much all year and most of the time pretty easy to catch ( with the right technique) and if one school isnt taking jigs drift on and the next one will be. IMO i would rather catch 10 on the jigs then 15 on spear as you can ruin the meat of the squid while spearing and on the rod its more fun.

I have speared a few down
I have speared a few down south, mainly around dunsborough. Pretty simple to shoot, just come down straight on top of them (like king goerge), they tend to stay still watching you. Harder to shoot from side on as they will often be moving away and provide a much smaller target. Place the spear in the middle of the tube towards to head, they dont rip off very easy. The meat has always been fine with speared squid, can never task a difference.
Pretty fun to shoot, especially trying to dispatch them underwater without getting bitten. Had a great session down south where I came across a small school. Shot one and let the head float down, the others actually came up to attack it and provided a few more opportunities to get a feed.
