Splicing trailer wiring
Submitted by Ericl on Sun, 2013-06-02 15:08
Hi all
Re-wiring a trailer and will need to connect2 wires to one in some areas. I came across this on another forum, but the chap who posted didn't mention who the seller was. Just that he got it on ebay. Wondering if anyone has seen anything like this and where they can be sourced.
Thanks for any leads
Eric

crimp/silicone/heat shrink thingos
Hillarys boat and tackle sell them, great product, use them on all the connections on boat and trailer, not cheap though i think $7 gets you 4or5.

You could try Martins trailer parts O'Connor.

Thanks for that.
Dont think Martins do them, but I'll get some from Hillarys, I can get away with about 5 of them.
Been looking for these for a few years now, since I last re-wired another trailer
Cheers

Join at drawbar
When i rewired my last trailer, i ran independant cables either side and into the plug at the drawbar. no chance of water ingress then and no black wires.

Agree. Run single cables up
Agree. Run single cables up to a weatherproof Luca box on the draw bar. Then you can join single cables to your hard wired sealed fittings with glue-lined heat shrink. Will not fail.

Couldn't agree
more. I buy all my LED's with 9mtrs of wire attached which makes it so easy.
I strip the last metre or so of wire and pass it through 6mm air line to the plug and fasten the trailer end down with a saddle harness which eliminates the cord getting snapped when some clown trips over it.

the best way
the best way is to solder your joints and heat shrink them with epoxy lined heat shrink then tape them with scotch 23 tape (self vulcanising tape) then place all the connections in a small scotch cast and then fill the scotch cast with the epoxy that comes with the scotch cast when the epoxy has solidified nothing is ever getting in there, scotch 23 tape comes with a scotch cast kit you can get them from auslec , M&M , Laurance and Hanson or most electrical distributors might cost you 50 dollars for the scotch cast kit but can tell you it will never fail and you will have peace of mind

I solder, coat in rtv then wrap in insulation tape
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

wiring
What i do is ,solder(use flux),coat soldered area with small amount of silicone (i use a syringe without the needle of course)slide the heatshrink over the area and shrink until silicone comes out of join , no more to be done.Cheap clear silicone is ok,also gives the connection flexibility and reinforcement. If you only put enough silicone in the syringe to do the job it is easy to clean out when it drys.Complies with marine standards for elec joins in wiring for boats, all joins must be siliconed and heat shrinked, so i have been told .
