Spooling reels

 Hi all,

Just after any ideas people have on spooling reels, i have both braid and mono in bulk reels and say i want to put 500m braid on a reel and 200m top shot of mono is there any relatively accurate way of measuring it out or is it just a guessing game?

Any help appreciated

Cheers

Sat, 2012-04-21 20:03

find out how many cm per crank of the reel (call that x, eg. it its 64cm per crank, then x=0.64) then 500/x= how many cranks you need for ur braid. then same for mono so, 200/x

fuuuuuuurrrk, im in a mathematical mood, been studying at uni for 5 hours straight!! hope my calculations are right

Good in theory

But crank distance is based on a full spool of line.Same as drag pressure.

Easy enough just to do it by

Sat, 2012-04-21 20:31

Easy enough just to do it by eye. Once you know about how much 200m of your mono will take up on your spool you just fill braid to that point. If you have too much on, then just cut some mono off, or take the mono off and cut some braid off. Or you can reverse it on the spool then reverse it all off, then put back onto the reel in the correct order. Do you really need to have exact amounts?

If you want to calculate it you can do it by volume. You measure the spools before you fill (you'd need to know your line lengths on the spools), then measure the width of your reel spool and the height you want it to be. Then using some year 9 (?) math, figure out the volumes and you know what distance to fill the spool til with mono before you add the braid.

Otherwise, like the height of the building using a barometer, you can always bribe someone. I.e. go to LFS, ask if you can use their machine when its quiet (might help if you buy some stuff...). You could also make a line counter (particularly easier if you have some lego gears, haha). Though, how do you know your reel will hold 500m of braid and 200m of mono exactly anyways? If you give me some diameter info I can chuck it into a spreadsheet and give you some capacities and you can fill the spool to 60% or whatever it ends up being.

Step 1: do some maths to work

Sat, 2012-04-21 20:43

Step 1: do some maths to work out the capacity, and check that your 200+500 even works.
Step 2: use colour metered braid and count it on. Its not that hard, I counted on 900m once ...
Step 3: top up with mono.

Let me make it more simple for you

Sun, 2012-04-22 01:14

Fishing = Fun.Most people that are great anglers (IMO) apply science to their fishing. Many without even knowing it,for example you pull up to a beach fishing spot, you climb the nearest sand dune have a look down the beach and find the gutters and sand banks ect.The reason they they are where they are and when is science. The only maths involved in the situation apart from cost to get there calculations is the fact that the more hours you fish the more you will catch. Now that said the more hours you fish the more you learn the science of fishing, lets call that experience for argument sake. Now lets explore it from maths point of veiw.If you stand on top of the same dune and have already applied the science stuff. Then you pull out the old abacus and do a calculation of the length of rod + the weight of the bait + the diamater of the line - the wind speed = x.Then you work out the light index + hours of fishable light/darkness=y.Then you calculate the amount of drag required ect =Z so you then work out X+Y+Z= the % chance of you catching a fish.Wow look how well i worked the whole thing out you will tell yourself while the guy that stood next to you has already parked his/her car set his /her bait and has been fishing for an hour. That takes us back to the first bit of math more time spent fishing = more fish.If you would like to sit down and discuss the science of fish then thats fine.Maths has very little to do with it apart from$$$$$$$$$. I will await the reply with anticipation. If the reply comes back that i spelt something wrong and used incorrect punctuation then some people have to much time on their hands.(Apparently they make things easier to understand)

Time to take your hand off it.

Sun, 2012-04-22 07:03

The guy is asking for advice on spool capacity and he copped a three line post from me over it.

Then, because irony is clearly lost on you, you put in a large pointless rant. Just the thing you're complaining about? He isn't on the sand dune doing the maths, he is at home doing some prep.

Pro tip: try adding a space after a full stop, it makes sentences readable.

Here is a pro tip as well Till

Sun, 2012-04-22 07:24

If you read his post he said he has bulk spools of each.       Now that in mind i would say that he is not going to buy coloured braid just to get his spooling right.        The pm i have sent to him will sort out his issues.        Have a nice day.

Work out the line diameter...

Sat, 2012-04-21 22:57

Work out the line diameter... then total capacity... and then mark on ur spOol with a marker pen. line up the braid fairly tight.. and the mono not quite_ don't stress..

Sun, 2012-04-22 07:14

just ask the guys at the tackle shop, how much line or braid capacity,im not that good at maths, but why make fishing complicated, also where you buy line or braid, some tackle shops will do it for you for free or a small price,if your not sure, make life easy for you

I know guys that spool reels every day that still need to take all the line off from time to time. You also need to put good pressure on with the braid and just a little with the mono.Just a little bit easier with a $2500 spooling machine.

Full to the brim

I don't know if this will help you but if I have a reel that I want to spool up with say a 300 yard length of braid with mono backing then I will fill the spool with the braid first and then join and top up with the mono until the spool is filled to capacity. You now have the exact length of mono required and it is now just a matter of reversing the line load using old line spools ( a cordless drill is good for this ) and your reel will be spooled perfectly.

spooling pressure

Sun, 2012-04-22 08:33

Has everyone forgotten about spooling pressure {allrounder touched on it a bit } But the capacity will change dramatically depending on pressure {ever notice how much more the line packs on after the first outing with your new line,even though you think youve wound it on tight  ???}

Braid has to be put on real tight , and by this I mean at strike drag pressures or the top length of line that gets used the most can dig and bind into the looser layers below resulting in bust off's ..

cheers fishfish..

Easier

Easier way, take you line and reel down to you local tackle shop with a spooler and ask them if they mind doing it for you, it may cost a couple of bucks but I'm sure they will help you out.
