Try
Try the south wall as well mate at Hillarys, anywhere there is weed. Have caught plenty around there myself.

Not sure
Not sure about to late in the day mate. I have always gone for squid as the sun pokes up over the horizon, then maybe 2 hours after. Have caught a few during the day a bit further out in my boat, but maybe because its deeper water. Just find some weed mate, cast your jig all around it, and hopefully luck will come your way.

I can't comment about shore
I can't comment about shore based but I've been getting some good squid around Hillary's in my boat lately, all drifting over the weed beds in 3-5m and within 1km of the shore. If you put in enough casts you'll have to get a few.
Also the bay to the south of the Challenger TAFE carpark (south Mole entrance/Macca's up from beach), always done well in there.

Used to pull up a few when
Used to pull up a few when fishing for bait near the rotto ferry in freo mate. Always hanging around the plyons down the bottom, so drop ya jig down and don't get snagged!!... work it from there. Good luck

Calm
Calm water, little wind is ok.

disagree
I prefer a little wind chop. Too calm and they are more finicky as the clarity is too good. Although it makes for much better visual fishing.
