Starter Motor Problem 150 hp Yamaha 2-stroke '94

G'Day,

I was wondering if any one knew what's involved with repairing a starter motor. The gear won't come out and engage. If I muck around with it, it will work for a couple of revolutions and then go back to not engaging. I have checked and it is receiving full power from the batteries. Otherwise the motor's in great nick and pushes a 20 ft Berty runabout along at 37knots WOT or 24 cruising.

Any info would be appreciated.

Stu

bendix issue

Thu, 2011-07-21 22:19

On my engine, I noticed that the little gear (called a bendix) that rises to connect the starter motor to the flywheel was rising very slowly or not at all. The solenoid make's that rise by acting on a piston with an electromagnet. The grease around the piston in the solenoid had dried an gone sticky. A quick clean with some WD40 and new grease and voila – good as new. I hear other common causes of this are corrosion on the battery connections and weak batteries and wire connections.

Starter solenoid??

Fri, 2011-07-22 07:23

Hey mate, I recently had a similar problem on my mercury where every now and then I would turn the key and get nothing. Turned out to be the the starter solenoid having burnt contacts, not sure if yours will be the same setup but my solenoid is separate to the starter motor. An easy check is wait for it to play up then bridge the solenoid wires ( bypassing the solenoid ) and see if it starts?? If she fires up straight away then bingo! If not and your power and earths are good then the starter sounds stuffed.

Yeah it clicks but the bendix

Yeah it clicks but the bendix won't rise and when I manually rise and turn the bendix, occaisionally it will go. It feels quite free, but I can't see what's going on. I'd rather fix it than pay out the $1400 quoted for a new one.

id say the same as fords_rule85 said the solinoid seems faulty

but it is important to check the connections for corrotion/secure as this can cause the same probs

and if theres no earth lead coming off the body of the starter, the body of the starter to engine is the earth and this should be checked

Will test the earth cable and look at the brushes when I get back to Perth.
