steering cable

Hey guys was just wondering if anyone could shed some light on when to replace ya steering cable on ya boat rather then waiting for it to break? My boats 5 years old and being my first I dont really have any experience with the matter so any advice would be appreciated.

We only just replaced the steering cable in the bayliner and it was built in 1986. I rekon you'll be alright for a while. Just use inox though - no marine grease.

Maintenance

Every year or so pull the centre cable right out and inspect it for wear, clean off any hard build ups,re grease and put it back on.
Lack of use and maintenance are the biggest killers of cables, most of them just seize up in the slide on the outboard.

Canarvonite is spot on. The slide bar on the out board is what you have to look after. That's what seized on mine.

Spot on with the weekly turn

But i've found the grease just clogs it up. Been told from a few sources that best just to use inox not marine grease despite the nipple. I cleaned out the grease on mine and replaced it with inox and it is easier than ever.

the best thing to lubricate with is actually a little bit of gearlube of anykind you can actually buy a pump similiar to a grease gun which screws straight onto a gear lube squeeze bottle

it has got a  greae nipple for a reason, you shoulnt need to worry bout the cable as carnarvonite said its the slide that siezes
