Stradic 8000 suitability for Jigging

Hello all,

I am in the process of trying to decide what kind of spinning reel I am going to get. I have been looking in particular at the stradic 8000 as it is quite well priced and also comes with 2 spools. This would give me the flexibility of using 1 spool for medium duty saltwater spinning (20-30 lb line) and the other for jigging (50lb braid).

My question is, has anyone used one of these for jigging before and will they be able to stand up to use with 50lb braid jigging for sambos etc.

What alternatives are there to this reel??

Thanks,

Dan

years ago, I used an 8000 for jigging - kings, ajs & sambos. I literally destroyed the reel within a few outings. It is inadequate for 50lb IMO.

I have used an 8000fi for casting on 30lb & feel it is much better suited to that application. (I've used it to chase feeding tuna & it works well particularly with the high retrieve ratio).

Stradic 8000

I have used the stradic 8000 spinning at quobba with 20lb braid and perfect for that but as for jigging i can't comment. Have a look at the Okuma Salina II they are pretty well priced and have a 10 yr warranty and the bigger versions are designe for jigging with about 20kg of drag. They also have a high speed model with a 6.2:1 retrieve rate. Haven't used one but a friend has and he loves it.

Nice reel but I would not trust them on the heavy jig........took 4 of them (10000's) to Monties last year and one of the handles lasted a half dozen drops, before snapping at the shaft on a smallish Rankin...(pls correct me on the fish Cmac, I know you will ) the user was a bit green with the fishing style, (but quickly came up to form )but still your gear should be bullet proof...and green proof. The other three where fine, but, I ditched mine after that for the rest of the trip.....now a surf reel  don't know if I trust the 20kegger drag rating either.....

The alloy used in the handle and shaft just twisted and broke off..........just seconds before the moment......

demersal jigging it'd be alright but maybe not Sambo's and the like. I've got one i use for demersal jigging and works a treat for good sized trout, chinaman, cod etc

I was about to say that for sambos you are well and truely undergunned. But for others it could be OK. Wouldnt use 50lb on it though. Go 30 instead.

use a gosa 18000 for sambos. But it should be up to the task, but if I was going to sambo jig (not my cup of tea) I would get a Saltiga or Stella. JMO.

And I am the proad owner off 5 gosas, but as Brad bell will testify with kelvin8tors Gosa 18000 with GT's, it smoked it pretty quick. I have mentioned in other threads that I am to rough with my gear to use a Stella etc, so have stuck with Gosas, but if you are going to jig for sambo's, I still think you better upgrade, or risk a burned gosa (even though nothing has touched my 14000 so far, and have hooked and pulled some monster Chinaman's without pressuring the reel.

yeah it is to smaller reel to run 50lb on it, however as mentioned previously it would be well suited to run 30lb and for demersals,

also doubles as a good spinning reel for many applications.

cheers

Thanks for the input guys, it seems pretty clear that it wouldn't be up to the task. I will probably just wait a while longer and save up for a stella/saltiga instead.

Have used em with 30lb and they seem to do the job. 30lb will stop most fish up to 30-35kg and thats going close to lock up. Just get a good rod with it

I am going to disagree with

I am going to disagree with people about not running 50lb on it.

But I agree with people that it is not for 50lb jigging for sambos etc, you need something heavier. I have boated some pretty serious fish on my 8000 (including one tiger shark substantially larger than I was in 30m of water at Exxy last week), but this was not all done on the drag. There was a lot of spool holding involved, and for that reason I run one of my spools on the 8000 with PE5 and the other with PE3 so I have the option of the heavier line if I think I will need it.

I have smoked out the stock drag washers on one of the spools (now replaced with carbontex) and the washers on the other spool are now getting sticky, but other than that the reel has stood up well to everything from sharks, giant mekong catfish, large makkies, rays etc.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Got one that I run 30lb for

Wed, 2011-05-04 19:50

Got one that I run 30lb for casting and pe4 - 55lb for jigging (Only landed smaller sambos so far) but if you were gonna go for bigger sambos I would go a saragosa as the cheaper option to a Stella. Having said that I have landed my biggest sambos (35kg+) on a stradic 4000!

I can't say I have given

Wed, 2011-05-04 23:52

I can't say I have given either a serious work out yet but I have the Ryobi Safari Metal Royal and the Okuma Salina II(not high speed) and am quite happy with them so far. i will no doubt one day upgrade the Ryobi to something bigger/heavier.

I see that there is a new bigger Ryobi out now, the Carnelian 10 and 12000.

They are much cheaper and could be worth considering, the Carnelian might be up to the PE8 work

Another reel that might be worth looking at and one I have been considering to replace the Ryobi is the Diawa Catalina 6500. Perhaps others, that do have experience with reel smoking fish, like Daz have some experience with this reel.
