Stupid question

I was just pondering this thought...

" If there i so much fuss over kids toys being painted with pain with very small amounts of lead in the paint then how bad is handling pure lead sinkers every weekend?"

I dont know about any of youz but when i use split shots , i bite down to clamp them shut.

I wonder how bad this is if they are kicking ap a sh1t about paint on a toy

IMO biting down on a split

IMO biting down on a split shot wouldn't do damage (poison wise), not like you are consuming it.

Leads Definately Fatal

Thu, 2007-09-06 20:21

However, I like mine to be cylindrical with a pointy hollow bit on the end and weighing around 80grains.  I generally feed it to foxes and cats and It definately fornicates their heads at 3700fps via cross hairs and long hollow tube thingy.

My advice to youse all is to handle lead with extreme care.

IF IT BLEEDS,.........WE CAN KILL IT.

handling lead for a few

Fri, 2007-09-07 06:08

handling lead for a few seconds is not going to give you lead poisoning...

Consuming it will.

The reason why a safety dept would have a go at a toy with lead in it's paint is not because the children are handling it, its because children smash toys, paint peels and they put shit in thier mouths all the time..

Using your teeth to close a splitty wont really make much of a difference either.. if you stuck the splitty in your mouth and sucked it for 30 mins, i still reckon nothing would bloody happen :P You may feel a bit ill but thats about it...

My advice, Ignore those idiots who jump up and down about safety... thier solution to everything is bar everything... its the classic case of someone gets murdered, lets search the killers house, oh i found the game manhunt, LETS BAN MANHUNT, THATS THE OBVIOUS REASON FOR THE MURDERS!

Some of these organizations are bloody idiots.

In future though, toughen up and use your fingers to close splitshots... atleast I do. :P

Biting split shot and lead poisoning

Fri, 2007-09-07 08:27

OK guys, joking and smart ass comments aside, lead poisoning is well known REALLY serious cumulative stuff, not immediately obvious at low levels but long term.

But hey - it's your health, you are responsible for looking after yourself, and no one else is forcing you to do anything/not do anything when you handle lead fishing weights.

Just do your own research so you are informed and aren't mislead by some of the irresponsible and uninformed comments made.

Lead is soft and bits break off easily. Rub lead even gently and it leaves a mark - which means some lead has been transferred.

If after you read "Health Impacts of Lead Poisoning" http://www.lead.org.au/fs/fst7.html you still think it's OK to take a risk with your own long term health, go right ahead - just don't do it to your kids.

But realise you are hoping that in the future when you need medical treatment for some problem, the medical benefits and insurance people don't use advanced technology and records about you to recognise the problems as being knowingly self inflicted on yourself, refuse you coverage and get you to pay for everything.

The health risk is entirely and easily avoidable if you handle the lead properly.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead_poisoning  Lead toxicity comes from its ability to mimic other biologically important metals, the most notable of which are calcium, iron and zinc. Lead is able to bind to and interact with the same proteins and molecules as these metals, but after displacement, those molecules function differently and fail to carry out the same reactions, such as in producing enzymes necessary for certain biological processes.  Lead may be contracted through the mucous membranes through direct contact to mouth, nose, eyes, and breaks in skin.

Have a look here -
http://proteus.pca.state.mn.us/oea/reduce/sinkers.cfm

Especially this paragraph -

Tips for Anglers to help safeguard wildlife and human health

Use non-lead fishing weights. Inexpensive and ecologically sound alternatives to lead fishing weights are available. Anglers should use sinkers and jigs made from non-hazardous materials such as steel, tin and bismuth.

Never throw old fishing gear into the water or shore. Discard old lead sinkers and jigs properly. For example, you may want to bring them to your local household hazardous waste collection site during your next visit.

Never put a lead sinker in your mouth or bite down on slip shot—use a pair of pliers instead!

Always wash you hands thoroughly after handling lead sinkers or cleaning out your tackle box.

Spread the word. Tell other anglers about the problem, and encourage them to switch to non-lead sinkers and jigs. Talk to your favorite retailers and ask them to stock non-lead fishing tackle.
