Sunday 7th fishing good

Well after a look on sea breeze this morning at 5:00 oclock the calls were made .and the trip out was all go. Jesse stayed in bed and Collin Hay came for a ride.with guess who yes Jody as #1 deckie.  The wind was light but still lumpy from yesterday .The plan was to stay in close [30m] but the fish weren't playing the game.only 1 small dhuie and 2 breaksea in the first couple of hours all released. And a 100kg grey nurse shark gave her a hard time. We headed out a little deeper 40m and things started looking better no big fish but fish .Over the next four hours many dhuies were tagged and released .most small from 350mm -700mm Jody was on fire catching fish after fish and Collin also getting a few stray dhuies.landing his PB.Wasn't till after lunch we found some bigger fish landing 2 around the 10kg mark they were quickly spicked and put on ice.On the way in we stoped at one more place for a quick drop and Jody nailed a great snapper and dropped another not long into the fight .In all a great day with plenty of fish TOTAL 21 dhuies  ,2 breaksea cod ,2 snapper 1 Gray nurse and a cuttle fish. We kept 2 dhuies and a snapper all other fish were tagged and released without venting We got 2 recaptures both dhuies .Both were tagged on the 23-5-2011  one had grown 15mm and the other 10mm both were in good condition .

21 DHUIES, no wonder Jody protects her no #1 deckie status, who wouldn't.  Top day on the water indeed!

Thanks for a great day Paul

Thanks for putting us onto the fish in your normal great style Paul. It was a most enjoyable day, and it was impressive to see so many Dhufish around.

Jody, your a star. And it is not all down to your lucky pearls. I watched your technique closely yesterday and your success is clearly built on skills and dedication.

Your dedication to the preparation of your gear and your bait is a great lesson to a lot of burgeoning anglers.

Thanks again to both of you for a really enjoyable day. Now to crack the double figure Dhuie.

Cheers, Colin

21 Dhu's????

Mon, 2011-08-08 08:49

Thats not fair!! Some off us go out day after day, and dont get ANY. Wonder if it has anything to do with where I fish?? Anyone heard of a dhu in Karratha?

Enough jokes. If I was down south I would feel blessed if I got one in the ols days.

Leads me to think about a few things.

Has the closure to com fishing made such a change, that when and if I do go down south I might be able to get one. From reports this does seem to be the case and I am wishing this.

More likely I am just crap.

Well done, thats just awesome, and I wont even talk about that stonker Pinky. All we could manage yesterday was a couple of stonker flags, one double the legal requirement, about 20 NW snapper of various types, with only 2 keepers, a houseload of what looked like snook, but probably baby barracouda (didnt have the correct pattern, and despite not being aware they are up here I would certainly say looked a hell of a lot like them), 2 fantastically coloured baby reds, and a price fish for the Mrs - a stoinker off a Dusky Morwong, that made her sh*t, calling a big red, only to have the deflation of the gray "not even" neighbours fish.

Awesome and has me dreaming of a return to the SW.

we ended up releasing a few dhus as well, but ours weren't as big as your 2 keepers.

nice work on the big snapper too jody, but yeah seaquest is right, thats one ugly fish!!

I think there has been a big

Mon, 2011-08-08 16:05

I think there has been a big increace in juvanile Dhufish over the last few years and yes I think the pro ban is the reason for this also the 2 month ban on the rec fishers will be of benafit .I have fished Two Rocks all my life and I can't remember cathing 21 Dhuie 20 years ago.when there were meant to be heaps more around. We did get a lot more bigger fish years ago but the small fish out there are unbeleavable and im only fishing a tiny area .The dhuie population is on the increase for sure .Most fishers are trying to do the right thing i hope with bag limits and release metherds.

Good day..

Mon, 2011-08-08 16:16

Great report Paul good stuff mate always a good feeling putting others onto good fish, and I agree with you I have been fishing the same grounds for around 10 years and have it fairly wired but the amount of mixed sized Dhu fish around at the moment is insane. We would never of caught 10 plus Dhus a few years ago let alone 20 in one session but the last couple of years they have been everywhere...

Looks like we are starting to reap the benifits from all the rules and regs which can only be a good thing..

Cheers

Lloyd

Great report and great

Mon, 2011-08-08 17:32

Great report and great pictures as usual , Omfg is that the legendary Colin Hay ? I dont recognise him.. Great fish guys. A question Im not to sure on . When and what type of pro ban was introduced and where does the ban extend to ? I thought there were still pro's fishing ?  If there is the pro ban that is a definate reason why there are so many juvy size dhu fish around. Not to mention the help of a two month demersal ban . Like previously said i only hope everyone does the right thing with size limits bag limits and catch and release care. Nothing worse then driving out n seeing a nice 6 or 7 kilo dhu on the surface because some greedy bastard has upgraded his catch.

Commerical gill netting is

Mon, 2011-08-08 18:51

Commercial gill netting is also banned from mid August to mid October from Albany to Steep Point.

The bans in place to protect whiskery sharks that have pups during that period.

Dhuie numbers ??

Mon, 2011-08-08 18:35

I think I'm going to be the odd one out here and say that I fish out from point peron and cant remember the last time a dhuie came over the side !! . Having said that I dont get out as much as I used too{ stupid work and weather } and I,ve also noticed the spots that I fish I never used to see other boats on or within eyesight but now there are always a few around.

I think it looks like I might have  to start exploring alot more ???

This is over a period of a year or two and I've also noticed a lack of some species and an increase in others , say we used to get alot of pinkies with our dhuie's at some spots now none off either and nanny's are turning up there ??? Same with a particular pinkie spot we had, we used to get the occasional grey band as a bycatch last time out thats all there was greyband and no pinkies  ??? {not that I'm complaining with that one !!!!!!} ....

Anyway just an observation that Ive made over the last couple of years ...

Cheers fishfish...
