tackle shop
Whats the go with a tackle shop in melville lately.
i went in the other day was going to purchase a shimano tiagra 30 & i was looking at the shop assistants then looking at the cabinet. they didnt come over to ask if i needed assistance or anything. they just sat there talking to each other. i stayed in the shop for nearly half an hour then went to leave then they spoke to me & said have a nice day.
too easy, wont be buying much out of there any more. not only that they used to stock alot of gear now theyre running out of lots of stuff. are they trying to shut the doors or is this how service is going now. blew me away. they used to be really good but the last three times ive been in there has been the same. just hope the manager might read this & lift their game a little. ive been a costomer for a long time as well and spent thousands of dollars there over the years, just a little disappointed

Depends on the management. I know when i worked in retail our boss put everyone new through a 3 night course, on customer service and salesmanship trainning. Very fun course and it definitly did increase our sales but also more importantly our staffs customer inter relations. More interestingly though is now when i go into store i can see who has GOT IT and who doesnt, its even funny seeing when the same techniques i used for selling stuff are used on me :)

Yep - Presuming you're talking about the same tackle shop in Melville I think you are right, they are shocking... so much potential but customer service is crap...
I presume buying in Exmouth will cost you a premium...
Go see Sam @ Campbells, Honsu @ Oceanside, Jarrod @ Compleat Angler or Luke @ Allboats (although yet to get up to see him in the new shop). All know their stuff...

yep customer service is pretty lousy there, and any service or you ask for a advice they point you to the high end stuff and if you show a face that its quite expensive they will leave you alone, that is poor customer service.

Wombat and
Wombat and Rig,
Very large orders from Shimano, Daiwa etc have arrived today and are being put on the shelf tomorrow. It is a shame that you didn't recieve the service you deserve.
Faulkner Family,
people are taught customer service and have procedures etc to follow so there is no excuse and will be followed up at open tomorrow.

fair enough Cam. maybe you have taught them but it sounds like they didnt listen very carefully to what you have taught them. they have to realise that its the customer who pays their wages. no matter how much they spend they still spend to keep the staff employed. give them a good reminder, we have had probs in the past with our staff and they soon learnt

maybe staff incentives are a way to go ?? i know its hard for tackle shops due to outdated tills and usually no computers that staff log into when doing sales .. but it works
we use it in my line of work all the time .. something like the best sales for the week gets a 6 pack at the close of shop on a friday ??
it doesnt need to be anything large but it adds some spark to the day .. like having a bet on the footy
and before anyone comments that the staff get paid, so they should do it anyway .. good luck .. employers are so fast to yell and so very hard to get praise from so anything nice from the employer is welcomed . no matter how small.. and its adds to team moral for a friendly compition to be running ..

Never bothered going back again. california squid don't cost $25 does it?

I find the younger crew that work there are quite enthusiastic to help you out albeit a little inexperienced, keen to offer a hand. Where the older blokes stand around talking and get the little grommets to do the hard work and rarely coming out from behind the till unless it's to show junior how to spool up a reel that you've just spent 800 bucks on.

Wombat78... You do realize
Wombat78... You do realize that this store has had 2 break-in's recently, where nearly all of the stores quality gear was stolen ... so you can't blame them for not trusting anyone... especially someone who can't even ask for assistance.
Personally... I've found the owners of this tackle store are really nice people, and have some very good advise... so maybe you should just say 'g'day' next time, instead of eyeing them off..
I'd also suggest you re think about keeping this post up...

I find customer service is shocking in general these days.
I walked into a NOR boating shop the other day to buy a new aerial for VHF.
After walking around for about 20 minutes, including going past the counter 3 or 4 times, i was never approached to see if i would like a hand. They did have the aerial I wanted but considering the blokes were happier sitting behind the counter talking to each other, I walked out.

The fact that they've had a few break-in's lately shouldn't influence the level of customer service they are offering.

You're right Brody. As my wife says you can't do their job for them. Their business is retail and customer service and if they can't deliver on those aspects then they won't last long. There is nothing wrong with debating a retail store's service aspect John Sorrell you wouldn't be complaining if there were positive posts put up.... I have a no service walk out attitude.

Fair enough John, but i reckon he was more peeved at not being approached.
If they've been burgled, and they have bugger all stock on their shelf, surely a worker could approach the customer (especially if he or she is looking at pricey gear) and let them know this, rather than; a) the shop looking shitty and b) the customer wondering what the hell is going on.

stay away
i as a customer dont like to be hounded by sales staff i would prefer they stay back behind the counter keeping themselves amused but if i asked for some help and they didnt come then i would walk out everybody is a little different and most sales guys will hold back a little more these days i guess all you really need to do is ask for assistance standing there looking and saying nothing wont get you much service just ask so we dont have to have hounding salesmen working in shops

Each to their own i guess, but it's a big difference from saying "Hi there, would you like a hand at all?" to being a "Hounding Salesperson".

well said
i have walked out of shops that i was going to spend good money in , because the assistants couldn't be arsed to help.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Haha, thanks Matt.
I find maybe 10-15% of customers know exactly what they want to buy, after doing research on forums and doing the rounds at different stores etc. A lot of these people end up buying online i find.
The rest have plenty of questions, or come into the shop thinking they want one thing and end up walking out (very happy) with something much better suited to what they want to do.

Customer service
I think everyone who works in retail needs constant reminders of the importance of customers and what they mean to a business.Keeping that in mind and speaking from experience customer service and sales can be BRUTAL.for every 1 nice customer there is usually 5 bad ones.So spare a thought the next time you go into a store because the guy working there might have just copped a mouthfull of abuse from some idiot who thinks it is his god given right to treat anyone working in retail like a piece of shit!
thats my 2 cents

Nothing worse
than a lack of greeting or even acknowlegement that you are there (despite walking past the front counter as you enter), and its only when you are walking out the door after 5 or so minutes wandering around looking for something that the person stops his personal conversation with his mate at the front counter to ask if he can help you - this happened fairly recently at a store where I have spent plenty of $ and if it wasn't for another guy who works there that gives me great service, I wouldn't ever spend my $ there again. A well regarded store on this site without mentioning names but will be pretty obvious.

Move to geraldton
All these salesmen need to visit Geraldton Sports, the boys have the kettle on all the time, know their fishing inside out and will actually talk you out of buying something if you only want it to add bling to your shed full of gear.
Will even invite new ppl to town to join them on the beach, draw maps, even stend time explaining and tying rigs
thats service

How I see it..
If I walk into to tackle shop,90% of the time, I know what I want. It's nice for someone to say Hi when you walk in. That means they know your there. No need to shadow me around the shop but. I will get what I need, then wander around the shop just looking at what new bling is in store. This you can do in any shop the sells tackle. The difference is when your not sure want you want, then a good tackle store salesman will make the sale. Recently, like a lot of people, went out and purchased some new SP's had no idea what to buy or how to rig them properly. After being asked a few questions about how an where I fish, I walked out confident that I bought what I needed and also knew how to rig and work them. That sort of service means I will be back............

Agree
Totally agree with what you are saying Rick, most of the time we know what we want but when you want to change tactics it is great to know the boys behind the counter know what they are doing and practice what they are saying.

Pretty sure i was in the one first mentioned last night.
Took them 30min to approach us to see if we wanted any help, we didnt but they didnt know that and when we said we were just looking they turn the lights out on the display cabinets that we were looking at. No other lights just them ones. Was very rude i thought. Will certainly never buying from them again.
They stock some nice high end reels in which i buy and will be getting a 1k+ reel next month and i know who i wont be buying it from.

My 2c
Unfortunately there's only so much managers / owners can do sometimes, but i gues the buck does stop with them.
I often find myself paying more (sometimes a lot more) but being equally more happy because of friendly staff who are willing to help and show a genuine interest in what you are trying to achieve.
I think the thing a lot of people in retail forget is - never assume anything about your customer. This is probably a bit of a generalization but I think a lot of people working in angling shops think if you're not walking in with your kids and mrs, you probably know what you're doing and know what to buy.
+1 anglers spot and oceanside for me
and glad that you got the issue sorted with your local.

its free to say hi.......... if you need a hand ask.......if they think you need a hand they can ask....its a 2 way st......but to sit there and not say anything from both parties is silly...this is how people get the wrong impression of the business.......i work in customer service and i sell high end gear.... and every time some1 walks through the door its a hi.......if you need anything just call out......never had any1 say shit service or leave unhappy.... if i cant help them then i ask questions so i can......we are in the business to make money but great customer service is free........service with a smile no matter what the outcome.......and whats more word of mouth is the best advertisment.......

The Money Has Always the Final Say
If there is one thing I have learn't,
I have never parted with money in a store that I have not been satisfied in, from products, customer service etc etc.
If I don't get that buy vibe I have the power to turn around and walk out.
That stores loses another store gains,
Ahh the marvels of competition.

I've just come back from
I've just come back from Exxy after a week, and all the guys and girls in Bluewater Tackle up there were great, Prices were definately cheaper than I could buy in Karratha and I'd guess around 5% on Perth prices.
Personally I'd easily spend slightly more at a shop I felt welcomed/wanted, than save $50 and have to struggle with poor service. I'd give the guys in Exmouth a go, the knowledge you'll gain will be worth more than the financial savings.

To give you an example,
To give you an example, Saltiga Dogfight - big black thing, probably 6500 or something, was around the $1399 mark which is most likely RRP, but they're listed on Motackle for $1349 - So $50 !!
As far as friendly service, Missus bought a snorkle, something wasn't quite right with a relief valve. Couldn't find anything wrong with it visually - Lets put a new one in anyway - Ah bugger none out back . Opened a brand new one, pinched the valve from it to fix up the one for the handbrake.
Sometimes a lil bit goes a long way.
