I didnt even bother fishing after a while, was content to just watch how the Yanks fished. Total catch was 5 stripped tuna about 4kg and two Dollies about 1kg each. Not very productive. Oh well it didnt cost that much, and was a good insight to charter fishing for tuna off San Diego. Wouldn't bother doing it again like this though.
What they would do is drop a live mullie over with a hook through its mouth and weighted with a small ball sinker and just let it swim out(bring on the tangles and crossed line). Thee boat would search for the tuna schools using the birds and dolphins as indicators, drive right up to it then start tossing live mullies from their massive live well out on the water to attract them closer to the boat. Then everyone would start droppoing their live mullies over. Some guys would be catsing metals from the front of the boat. Big 200-250gm ones. Didnt see anything smaller than maybe 150gm.
Have fished one of the charters before - Royal Polaris and though it is crowded, they are all very organised and co operative, Over there it is not the gear but the fisherman. Alot of very large Tuna are caught with non bling reels and oh you should see their live bait tank! Their deckies there really work hard too.
Yep totally agree with the co-operation Alfred, no one got aggro at all, even with massive tangles, everyone was very courteous. Yep the Deckies worked damn hard when it came time to chucking net loads of live mullies over. And yep their live bait tank was three tanks, each 4000L.
Unfortunatly for us the Fishing was bust for us that day, but they did extend the trip by 3 hourse to try and get us onto some, got in well after dark.
i have watched some cool vids shot on a large 100ft+ boat called Excell that had plenty of monster yellowfin action with fish up to 300lb and despite the fact that there were about 35 blokes on the boat it worked fine with a bit of co operation (i think one of the vids was called "big boat big fish"? . cheers

Some of those rods look pretty long for charter use?
Maybe its just the perspective, but with that many people on board what would you be casting to?
Or am I on the wrong track?
