Tagged black bream in murray river
Submitted by jighead on Mon, 2013-10-07 18:19
My brother just caught a tagged black bream in the murray river at north yunderup going 38cm. Just wondering who would of tagged the fish. It has a phone number and another number but will chase that up tomorrow. Would it be tagged by fisheries or by a rec fisho. Just cleaned it up nice and it is a recfishwest tag.

only mentions tagging in swan-canning and walpole-nornalup, either way calling up the numebr will explain it.

Awesome
Do you know if he has been hitting further up-river at all? Just wandering if the big models are around upstream yet? Been meaning to get back down there, now the weather is better I might head down to the islands.

Bream were tagged during the bream comps to see if relocated fish would return to the Murray. Feedback to the number would be appreciated.

Is the tag green?
If the tag is green then I'm 99% sure it's one of the bream that Bear is talking about. Tag number will be between 001 and 150 from memory. If it is one of these fish, it has been at large for well over a year, and was released at Mandurah fishing and sailing club.

Yes mattG the tag is green
Yes mattG the tag is green and the tag number is 150 actually. Will be interesting to find out what size he was when he was tagged. Good to see he made his way home, didn't think they would swim that far.

Cool
I'll dig out the data sheet tomorrow with the details of how long it was when tagged. It's about the 6th fish that has been recaptured close to the location that it was originally caught.

That would be great MattG.
That would be great MattG. It's good to see how this tagging can give good information on the fishes movements and growth rates. Thanks for your help.

Tag 150
Originally caught in the serpentine on 12 August 2012. My data has it measuring 28.5 cm on that day, which gives it a growth rate of about 10cm over the year which is way too much fro a bream! (Is the tag definitely 150? Tag 160 was 36cm which would be a far more accurate growth rate) Growth rate was never part of this study though so I'm not concerned about that statistical outlier. What is interesting is that this is the first fish that was caught In the serpentine and returned to the Murray!

Was definately 150 and can
Was definately 150 and can guarantee you it was 38cm. No lies here mate but do agree that is a big growth rate over 1 year. What do you reckon. My brother has a photo, the tag, and fisheries now has the frame.

Good to know we're talking about the same fish! Our team tagged about 80 fish that day, and its entirely possible that the length was entered incorrectly on the data sheet. Everyone does their best but they are only human at the end of the day.
