Tips for Fitting out a Dinghy

looking at going up to exmouth in Feb. Looking at buying a Tinny with a few mates and Fitting it out ourselves.

And After having a talk with Spess, thought I'd start this.

So the main issue is with storage and the limited space. Setups for rod holders (and trolling), Eskys Food/drinks/fish and Bait, GPS/Fish Finder Mounts, Anchor Well, cutting boards, seats tackle etc.

Anyone with Ideas, tips Please post up. Photos would be great aswell

Cheers
Dean

Depending on what type of dinghy you purchase, it's always a bit of a challenge to create space..Turning the seats into storage compartments is a great way for creating storage ares in your boat without being in your way..Turn your seat into esky!

what ever your budget is

double or triple it. All the little things add up (eg I added a second 45L fuel tank, and after you add in the t-piece ball valve, tank, connections etc and 2m of hose = $250). It gets expensive real quick.

I've been wrapping my head around ways to add a collapsible rocket launcher to my s/c open boat without emptying my wallet and still needing to donate a kidney.......I have failed thus far.

fit out

Sat, 2008-10-11 10:54

depends on what size you buy. there are plenty of after market gear to add but best thing is fill the boat with the anglers you will be fishing with, head out and see how  you guys fish.

may sound stupid but people prefer different things and people have different fishing styles and this can vary greatly depending on the "captain". if a few of you are buying then this is important. got to find the happy medium and best to do here rather than waste fishing time up north. remember to organsie the boat well because murphys law; when the fish are on the last thing you want is to be re arranging the inside of the boat. if 2 rods go off trolling how will you react....etc

placement of items should always centre around otimum stability, this is critical in a dingy/tinny; especially dependant on the ocean at the time.

easy to cut the seat and slide in an esky, a mate fishes that way and he has no problems. sounder on side near tiller steering so easy to read etc

i have a removable baitboard/rod holders that drop into 2 rear transom rod holders. this was custom made but $$; but it works perfectly and i can easliy pull out and throw up front if i wont.

but the best advise is to fish and learn from the experience. i ultimately set my boat (Centre console) up for stability and ease of movement when on the water. i also move stuff like esky etc according to ocean so i get best engine performance and stability. optimisation theory; maximum benefit-least energy.

Ok thanks guy If all goes to

Ok thanks guy

If all goes to plan, we should have the tinny by the end of november.

Most of the bits and pieces I can get from work, but one thing I am struggling with is how to mount a sounder and Gps, which the driver can view easily.

sounder

if you are concerned with the position then get one with a moveable/rotating arm. does your tinny have a console or just standard gunwale cofiguration.

easy to place a mounting bracket though

most guys sit to one side with tiller steer, then work from this position

There's a few pics in my gallery Dean of my old dinghy (Adam now own's it).

Keeping it simple is the key, one advantage a dinghy has is you can easily move all the way around it.

I guess well just have to wait until we get one and go from there.

I had a look at your pics john, they will help a lot cheers. Probably end up mounting the sounder and Gps how you did john. How did you find it with the sun though? Might be able to get a box put around it to make it easier to see?

Mounting

Sat, 2008-10-11 12:06

My mounting was temporary but I never ended up changing it. Worked well and I didn't have to drill any holes in the boat.
