hi,
my starter is catching when i give it a little tap with a hammer, but then it will not go any further. does this mean i need to replace the starter motor. how much are these?

i think the right thing to
i think the right thing to do is turn the key to start the motor, not hit it with a hammer
. it does sound like it will need to be fixed or replaced. wouldnt want to be out on the water and it wont start no matter how hard you hit it

starter motor under the flywheel
it's the starter motor under the flywheel, might be the solinoids. not sure how to test them, could just be the leads???

nah mate. if it is catching
nah mate. if it is catching a bit when you tap it there is something holding it back, like it might be on its way out or there is a bit of corrosion on the shaft that is limiting its movement. not worth messing around with it. pull it out and get it sorted . not sure if they would fix or replace. usually its the shaft like on a lot of starters , even in the cars but the wiring could be breaking down

Reiterating what I posted last month
OL YELLA.... are you mechanicaly minded?
If not I would be getting it checked by someone that is... don't want to hear reports of another tragedy.
I know paying for it is not cheap but "How much is your life worth?"
I deal with a lot of risk management in my line of work and "I wouldn't risk hitting the water till it is sorted".... unless it starts OK with a pull cord. Sure as hell wouldn't want to rely on a hammer!!
Below is a copy/paste of my comment on your post from last month when you had to get towed in.
OL Yella,
If you aren't sure, or confident to do it yourself, I would advise to get it checked by a marine mechanic or someone that is competent.
I, and others, could give you advise online but without having access to your boat we would only be guessing as snapper said.
