Total Noob to this game
Hi everyone, great site firstly.
Ok, i am absolutely new to sea fishing never done it before, only sat and watched others casting out. New to the country also, i am from the UK. My questions are these:
I will be buying a mid priced rod/reel combo from Kmart to start off and a small selection of hooks and floats etc, my question is obvious really - what size/style of hooks do you all recommend, what floats if any or do i go for bottom fishing or is it a combinaton on the day?
I used to carp fish a lot back in the uk, but that was fresh water.
I will be going up to either Quinns rock area or down to Burns beach by the rocks, if any of you know the areas at all, and what should i expect to catch? Oh and whats a good bait to start off with.
Lots of nooby questions but i just want to wet my line and hopefully get some fish on the other end.
Thanks.

You're much better off
You're much better off heading into a proper tackleshop and talking to the guys there. They'll have better combos than kmart (but still have ones for any budget) but will able to advise you much better of what would suit rather than trying to pick the right one in kmart and figuring out later you bought the wrong thing.
They'll definitely be able to help you out with all the info you need and what to get/what works and where to use it. They'll also be able to give you ID books and bag/size limit guides. Even if you end up getting a rod and reel from kmart, it'd be worth heading to a tackle store first. You'll probably get something there though :p
If you're north of the river, theres The Fishing Shop (woodvale) and the Tackleshack. There should be a bluewater nearby too. South of the river Oceanside are always helpful too (I often go there and I live NOR). Also campbells in leederville. Just dont go to any stores that are three letter acronyms.

Ask before buying.
Also find out what you need and the type of areas you'll be fishing.....then buy what you need. Also get a good quality outfit, so you'll enjoy your fishing more. Set a budget and stick to it but ask the questions first !!

Thanks for info, theres a place up in ocean keys i can drop into can't remember the name now, 'hope its not a 3 letter acronym store'...
Could i catch with bread on the hook, or has it got to be rubby dubby or even jelly baits, i have seen on fishing shows over the years that just a red hook works in certain situations, maybe not off the beach at Quinns i bet lol.

The most common baits will be
The most common baits will be squid, mulies (pilchards/sardines) or prawns. Whitebait would also work. Bloodworms can work well for whiting (and probably herring too). Dough or bread baits are rarely ever used, and usually only for things like buff bream (not eating fish unless you're a masochist). All real bait here :p
Dont forget the berley or oil. Can make a lot of difference when beach fishing and can bring around the herring and tailor (the staples of beach fishing).

Welcome to W.A
Hi mate welcome to W.A.
I have fished Quinns Rocks beach plenty of times. It can be hit and miss for fish.
Usualy you can always get a few hearing and whiting. The beach and small rock groyne in front of the shop is as good as any place to start.
At night you can get tailor and i have got a few sharks and one nice mulloway there as well.
As the crew all said go to a tackle shop for advice, you wont get any from large retail stores.
