4.5 Patrol
I have a 1998 4.5l Patrol (manual). Purchased it mainly for it's towing capacity. Towed my 1.5t boat (fully loaded over 2t) to Coarol Bay a couple of years ago.
Petrol use was around 15-17lts per 100kms. Towing was excellent in particular when I needed to overtake trucks etc.
Between Perth and Northampton fuel used was a bit higher due to all the hills, but once on the flats North of Northamption came down. One thinh I learnt no to do was use cruise control too much except on the flats.
One thing I did do was have the rear suspension check and in the end had it upgraded to heavier system to allow for the weight.

Prado petrol is 4 litre
And they tow brilliantly - love mine and tow a 6.8 seaquest ally and the huge brakes also give a level of comfort

Stay away from Navaras
Dodgy clutches when used for towing (with some heavy 2ton use) , and closing the doors sounds like an empty Milo tin .
Just one more cast , honest !!!

+1 on the D40 Navara. Plenty
+1 on the D40 Navara. Plenty of room in they back seats for big blokes + the bonus of the added try for maximum shit storage capacity, though after upgrading from an 88 SWB patrol, oh I miss torque...

+1 on the D40 Navara, I have got the 4l V6 Petrol and it pulls my 6m Ali with ease, overtakes road trains in a heartbeat. I got a 2010 towards the end of last year with 11,000kms from a dealer for $29,990 basically a new car and it would take allot of driving to make up for the extra cost of a diesel. It is also allot of fun to drive. My sister gets 600 kms before the light come on in her 2012 D40 Diesel While I get 500km but have allot more fun getting from a to b.
