trailer rust question -slowing it down

Hey guys.just a question about my boat  trailer.

The crossmembers near the keel  rollers have got some rust on them bad enough  that  the  steel is flaking.

They are still solid nontheless  . trailer is ten yrs old ,washed properly every time.

Is it possible  to slow it down at all.?

What  have people done ?

Is it worth cleaning it up and painting or is it a waste of time?

if you clean off excess rust then give it a good regular coat of fish oil that will help a lot.

What brand of trailer is it

What brand of trailer is it maggot. If its a dunbier they sell galv crossmembers to suit. We regularly fit new crossmembers at work to trailers that otherwise have a good outer frame..

Otherwise its a clean up and 2pak paint job. The galv in a can is a short term fix.

Mechanically remove all of the rust, wire brush, disk etc; basically back to clean metal.
Coat with phosphoric acid (wear protective gear) (Bunnings - Ranex); don't let water get on it. Allow a few hours, wipe of excess with rags and then immediately brush paint on a good quality cold galv.

If its SHS or RHS, you can't get to the inside, so replace.

Cheers Pete

Maggot speak with luke at chivers. They still make trailers so they may still beable to make up or sell new you a new crossmembers.

At work we have fixed plenty of trailer crossmembers by having them sandblasted on the rusty area's and then we prime and paint up.

Used to get a paint called pheonix , that was like a jell, water bassed , that worked so well i've used it on boat trailers without galvanising. If you are looking for a cheap fix google pheonix paint and it may still be avalible.

Brush of loose rust and paint, 1st with undarcoat then with top coat and job done. My own trailer was done with it 12 years ago and still going strong, no galvanise at all.

Bingo. I used to use this stuff a fail while ago but through a different supplier. Haven't been able to find it since and nobody seems to know what I'm talking about. I'll try and track some down for myself. It works well.

Dodgy what do you reckon is on my trailer? That trailer would have to be close to 15 years old and I reckon I could refurbish it, but it's a lot of work which I don't really have the time for?

My trailer would be nearly 20 yrs old, I've stripped it and had it regalvanised twice and i reckon i will do it again. Both times cost less than 800 bucks. If you do it right it should come out like new.
