Trawler crew rescued off Two Rocks

A crew member of a trawler was rescued off Two Rocks last night following a busy day on the water for emergency services teams.

About 8.10pm police received information that two of the boat's crew were unwell after inhaling dangerous fumes and needed urgent medical treatment.

The 27.8m trawler was about nine nautical miles off-shore.

The RAC rescue helicopter reached the vessel first and directed two rescue boats from the Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group to its position.

On arrival rescuers found just one crew member needed urgent treatment and Water Police organised for an ambulance to meet rescue boats at Mindarie and take the patient to hospital.

Recieved urgent call last night advising explosion on vessel and one person injured. Both boats dispatched and was fun travelling at 25knots at night dodging cray pots. When we arrive we had a delicate operation to come along side the trawler and take the injured person off with 1-2m seas. Vessel was approc 11nm of the coast.

Once onboard found injuries not as bad as first expected and he was taken to Mindarie to waiting ambulance.

Would have been a tricky one to get someone off in those conditions.

Was it the big Naiad  or the launch that you got him off with.

Launch

Due to the height of the trawler deck had to use our larger vessel. Naiad was standing by just in case. Trawler also had his booms down on each side around midships for stability. Came in on his Stb quarter and transferd him on our port bow. So I was watching the vessel and the booms and to add to it all there were commercial cray pots all around. Certainly was the trickiest transfer I have done and i was able to breath again once clear. Then came the 25knt dash back to Mindarie

Transfer

Know what it feels like. Did a tranfer with our 26 foot Penguin early last prawn season when  crewman on a trawler mangled a thumb and had to be brought in, much the same conditions and trying to sneak in behind the boom and yet stay in long enough to do it safely. Took 3 goes to get replacement decky on and injured bloke off with his gear.

Certainly makes the heart speed up thats for sure.
