Trebles on jigs, whats your opinion?

wondering if anyones ever put a treble on as a jig assist instead of the stinger? how did it go? does anyone do this usually?

I have seen hardcore Jap jiggers that run a treble off the bottom of their jigs!

They seem to swear by it, but it's not for me..

imo ya lose most of your fish because of the trebles and most people these days take trebles off lures and put singles on because of the better landing rate

Singles all the way! Much safer boatside handling, much less damage to the fish and far fewer thrown hooks.

As Sam mentioned, some Japanese jiggers run trebles on the bottom of the jig in pelagic rich waters. Doggies specifically.

If you are targeting catch

If you are targeting catch and release, then trebles are a bad idea IMO.....after listening to Peter Pakula the other night, I now squash the barbs on my singles when jigging for amber/sambo to minimise harm to the fish, and any loss is an error by the fisherman as pressure is not maintained....as my young bloke found out yesterday.....

Trebles on jigs....

Mon, 2010-11-01 18:10

It really depends on what you're chasing. Japs use trebles on jigs for chasing pelagic fish coz these type of fish like to target their prey from behind, and usually have small mouths with thick bones inside its mouth. Trebles offer more hook points for better hookup rate.

For sambo and other dermesal jigging, best to go with jigging hooks. You can go double single assist hooks. What I find is dermesals and the seriola (sambos, ambos, ytk) family of fish tend to swipe the jig from the side or go for head shots, hence the assist hook from the top of the jig.

I wouldn't bother

Mon, 2010-11-01 20:23

I wouldn't bother, some of the charters wouldn't even let them onboard. The charters are planning on catching the same fish all season, so anything that messes them up, is frowned upon. As a few of the other guys pointed out, its not necessary with sambos or ajs.

Geez mate they're sambos, they're as thick as blowfish when they're firing, you're thinking about it all a bit hard.

I'm merely pointing out that sambos are not finicky feeders or require any special magic.

I don't know what experience hekser has with them, but if you're getting bumps and no hookup, I'd be working on my action or jig selection, not make my jig bristle with barbs.

Yeah till is right mate, if your really worried about not getting as many hook ups just run normal twin assists, but even then it is pretty unnecessary for sambos.

Limited experience

Only been jigging the once a few weeks back and we never missed a hookup ,both the sambo's and amber jacks really hit the jig's hard.

Certainly no need to use trebles , which is a better result for both the fish and fishermen.

My experience is that if the sambo doesn't hook up the first time they will always come back for a second go. Had one come right up to the surface once. Hit the jig a few times before it was hooked. Trebles IMO should only be used if the fish is going to be kept. They can do heaps more damage to a fish than an assit hook. Plus they can be a pain getting out so why would you bother?

Sizing hooks for jigs is a

Tue, 2010-11-02 14:00

Sizing hooks for jigs is a little different to sizing hooks for bait fishing. The gape has to not catch on the jig, or you have to use stiffy rigs, or catch protectors. I think there was a previous thread about it and Shout! Kudako in 6/0 was considered a good size?

Jigging is a lot of fun and the sambos is a world-class fishery, so make sure you get out and have a go!
