trolled for tailor on the river on sunday

trolled on the river for tailor on sunday afternoon, between dalkeith and chidley point.  hooked two, but both jumped and in the process threw the hooks.  i was using a metal slice with one treble on the back end.  am i doing something wrong to lose both when they are umping or is that par for the course?  Also what are people's opinions for lures for river tailor?

river tailor

Mon, 2012-11-12 23:40

hi, i not a big experience but i have troll a lot in the river ( around Matilda Bay) and caught plenty of them

what i used is yo_zuri minnow srystal lure( quite expensive tho, but i can get it online for only $13 each, better than pay $23 at the shop)

the one i used is 1.5m dive

and yes, when they jump, sometime i also lost.

all the best

Treble

Change the treble for a single 'jig style' hook and you'll quickly convert hook-ups to fish in the boat.

Tue, 2012-11-13 09:08

I'm a local wholesale manufacturer of goods not many of us left these days...because a majority of retailers opted to import cheaper inferior goods and screw the local industry ...now the shoe is on the other foot , crapping on about local support ...haha

Drag

Tue, 2012-11-13 11:01

Set your drag pressure so that you can easily pull it off the spool. That way the fish will swim instead of being dragged and wanting to jump when hooked up. Once you've stopped the boat and have the rod in your hand tighten up the drag a little and bring the fish in, keeping the rod tip down - even in the water if you have to.

You'll know mate when your rod doubles over. It's better if they don't jump cause that's when they usually spit the hooks.

Bottom line is, Tailor are pretty good at throwing hooks. All these little things help, but I might add; use a landing net. They have a knack for getting off just as ur lifting them into the boat. Lost 2 out of 3 boat side last time.

What Time?

Tue, 2012-11-13 16:53

Sorry for asking a newbie question but what time of day are you trolling on the Swan,  Was on the River sailing on Saturday Arvo (lovely weather! if your asking) and was thinking might be worth having a crack while we are on those long reaches.

Is it better close to the shore line or way out deep?

What colour lures work best if you don't mind me asking?

Can come on the bite any time

Tue, 2012-11-13 17:53

Can come on the bite any time of day. If the opportunity is there throw a lure out. Probably better away from the shore line more for snagging reasons. Anything that moves and flashes is good. Hope this helps.

if you are sailing on a thompson 750 say, reaching at 20+ knots is probably a bit fast and you probably won't have time for it anyway ;) ....  i was varying between 4.5 and 6 knots.  i was out early / mid afternoon, which is a bit early i think.  sun up or sun down i think is better.

yo zuri crystal minnows by farrrrr. Been getting alot of tailor in river with some days unlimited amounts just following the birds smashing bait and tailor in a frenzy and not bad in size either. Good fun when its 15 to 20 knots and cant get out deep. :) few crabs abouts too
