Trolling Motor Batteries
Submitted by BarraSlayer on Fri, 2016-06-17 20:46
Hi Folks,
Just purchased a motorguide 80lb trolling motor and need to buy 2 deepcycle batteries to make a 24volt system. Done a bit of research and AGM are the go by the look of it. Though I would ask fishwreckeders before I spend $7-900 on a set of batteries.
Anyone have minnkota or motorguide that can recommend a specific battery and cheapest retailer? Also need a charger.
Cheers
Barra

Make sure you estimate your
Make sure you estimate your usage and then get batteries that are at least double that. The less charge you take off a battery the longer it will last. If you're fishing snags for bream you don't use a lot but I've flattened mine chasing crabs across the Coodanup flats.
Ctek chargers are great. I charge up my 2nd battery after a day out and then leave it permanently attached to my cranking battery on float charge.
One thing you wanna be religious about is charging up those trolling batteries as soon as you return.

Thats good and bad because if its always on charge you wont know when them gonna die untill your out and they wont charge haha
I very rarelycharge the batteries on my boat now unless we have been running fridges with the boat off and the run in normally fully charges all batteries
I throw the ctek on my machinery if i dont use then for a few months

I know a couple of people who are trialling these batteries in motorhome situations and I am hearing some very good things.

I bought my Bosch 120ah AGM
I bought my Bosch 120ah AGM battery from Goodchilds . I also run a new Motorguide but a 12v version. Hopefully weight is not an issue because those AGMs are heavy suckers.A couple of 120s should do the trick.
I charge it with a CTEK 5.0 charger which does the job but very slow so you might want to go something with a higher output. Ebays the go for Cteks but i got mine from Goodchilds as well.

Cheers guys
Ended up with 2 x 120 agm bosch and ctek 24volt charger from goodchilds. See how they go..friggen heavy at 36kgs each and motorguide must be 15kg was a bit nervous having it under the hatch at the front.
The lithium batteries looked like the go as they are light as... but $1000each
Cheers
