Two Rescued from sea off Turtle Bay
Submitted by carnarvonite on Mon, 2012-02-20 11:08
Just heard that two people were rescued from the sea off Turtle Bay on Saturday after their boat capsized. They were in company of another boat but became separated due to the heavy conditions and capsized while turning around to look for the other boat.
The boys at Shark bay sea rescue located them via their epirb and a flare being set off when they weren't spotted when not far from the over turned vessel.
They were lucky that they hadn't discarded their out of date flares when they purchased a new set , keeping them on board because they had used them trying to signal their mates before setting the eprib off leaving the new ones for later.

Not a good place to be
Not a good place to be floating around in the water, have seen some XO sharks around there and usually plenty of them.Very lucky. What size boat were they in? Helped to tow a boat in from there one year and it took close to 8 hours, not fun.

Not sure
Not sure of the size but with the conditions on Saturday to consider it would have to be at least 20 foot IMO.
The rescue boat crew reported wind waves in the 2--2.5 metre range, very sharp and nasty to work in. Wind was forecasted to be around 25+ knot S-SW , glad it was them out there and not me or our crews.

why would you even go out in
why would you even go out in that. the waters can turn real quick up there. with the wind running straight down between the main land and the island it can get a tad uncomfortable. got caught out there once and took over 3 hours to get back. good to see the blokes were found nice and safe

Boat wrecked - Shark Bay
Thanks for the comments guy's. Happy to hear nobody jumped to any wild conclutions. The day was fine when we set out. We just come off the top of a swell that had no bottom and a short one directly in front. Thanks to the Epirb and the boy's at Denham Sea Resce, the out come turned out well for both myself and the skipper.

Tops
Good to be able to read a reply from someone who was involved . Sounded like it was well carried out by all and no one doing anything silly with potentially fatal outcomes

Complaint
Heard from another source that there was a report on the news last night that there was a complaint on how long it took for the sea rescue boys to turn up, think it was something like five hours so the mate who told me said.
We , speaking for the Carnarvon sea rescue crews, and all the other groups are all volunteers and unless we are out training in the boat when the call comes through you are going to have to wait untill we can get the numbers, put the boat in the water and get under way, all this takes time, same as the distance to travel to the search area.
If we had more willing volunteers things could be different but until then you are going to have to wait unless you put your hand up and join to take some of the load off.
