Under boat adhesive strip light... trial
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2015-03-03 20:59
off for a night fish tonight & I had 5m of led rope light laying around (300 LEDs) placed it under the hull to see how it goes. Not sure if the adhesive will hold but we will see how it goes, have cable tied both ends incase it comes off! I'll take some photos while out in the boat tonight & if it works out well I'll get some brighter ones and hold in place with sikaflex ready for the prawns!!

Looks interesting, and I mean good.
I'm with Bruce, use Sikaflex, the lights won't go anywhere.

That tape can be pretty good
I stuck strips of that inside an aluminium ute canopy one winter, expecting it to peel when it got really hot in summer--never looked like falling off. Secret is to give the tape plenty of time to set, IMO--works with stuff like GoPro stick-ons. etc.

Agree with this - I've had
Agree with this - I've had some on my awning for the past 3 years and hasn't showed signs of budging. Will stick well to a nice, clean surface.

The lights have a IP65
The lights have a IP65 rating and as expected the lights basically fell off with in half an hour, but was long enough to see if it was worthwhile coming up with a solution to secure them in place. Like mentioned you would have to use an adhesive like sikaflex to make sure they didn't come off and end up being entangled. That aside lights worked awesome but Due to the angle they were positioned the light pretty much lit up underneath the boat, to the point where you had a light scope of 1.5m either side of the boat (only had lights on one side) and 5m below . I'm going to get a 4m length of 20mm pvc pipe and cut down the length so you can slide that over the bottom lip of the boat, then sikaflex the lights to the pvc pipe at an angle that will give a more horizontal spread of hopefully 4-5m of usable light :) best thing is to do one side of the boat should cost no more than $35 in materials... Cheap as and from what I saw last night very affective. I won't get a chance to make it this week but when Its done I'll post some pics...
Btw saw one gar last night & got a feed of herring... Silver sands

These are what i use
work a treat for lower end of market. Gives up to a few meters radius of light depending on water clarity and colour. Mine r blue.
stuck mine on with sikaflex and never had trouble. If you had 4 of these on the boat it would provide great light.
i know your trying to be inventive, but at $100 for 4, it's worth a look.
cheers

Light strip on the transom.
Ive had a LED light strip on the transom under the motor leg, it doesn't get the water pressure there while underway and has been there for a couple of years now fixed with the supplied sickly strip. Gives good light for squiding and looks cool in the wash when underway.

Off the track a little
I havent ever done much prawning but obviously i get that you need light in order to see prawns & scoop them. But I thought that they shy away from light. If you have the underide of your boat lit up, wouldnt that make them avoid you?

when ever ive done it i have
when ever ive done it i have used the cheap 12volt fluro lights that dont give to much light out as the brighter light does seem to send them deep. i normally just have them under the gunnel.
