Submitted by outdoinit on Wed, 2012-11-14 22:49
Hi all,
I want to upgrade my boat trailer dual suspension and would like to know the best people to talk to, I would like to get Galv axles and springs etc and need to have a Min spec of 1500kg rating per axle. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated..

Just did mine last weekend on
Just did mine last weekend on a tandem setup ...you can buy the kit already to bolt on with rocker ...just grind all the old bolts off or the kits come with new braces as well if you wanted to weld them on...
Fisho Ron and Randall inspired me to do mine myself theres a couple of threads that you could dig up ...set me back maybe $400 non galv and just cleaned up old axles..

It is not only the axles but
It is not only the axles but also everything else that needs to meet your rating, including tyres, wheels, bearings, brake system, etc.etc. , and the trailer chassis itself.
I looked at my set up rating and deceided to get a complete new trailer that meets the rating I wanted plus some more just for safety sake.
There is nothing wrong with my old trailer as I did do the above suspension upgrade etc,in february, which is not hard to do if you have the tools bar that it is not rated for 3 t.
It worked out easier and cheaper that modding the old one as every thing needed doing including relicensesing due to the required modifications to bring it up to my set specs and the trailer being a complete legal road registered 3 ton boat trailer.
This is to me very important as when it goes wrong, you are covered for damage done and sustained while towing on a public road.

TO upgrade to 1500kg per axel
TO upgrade to 1500kg per axel you would need 4 wheel electric or electric/hyrdalic brakes, brake away brakes, bigger tow hitch, light truck tyres, bigger axels and springs thats just things I can remember then it will also have to be reinspected over the pits.

Thanks Guys for Ideas
The trailer in question was built in 2003 and is lic and rated for 3500kg,, BUT previous owner took the old rusty springs off and put the Single leaf springs on it. They look a bit dodgy to me?? And only rated to 1400kg per side (2800 kg overall)
All 4 wheels are braked and the axles are rusty but I now think they may come up ok
I just dont like the look of those springs, for one and as I will be towing the boat fully loaded to Derby in April next year (doing a boat trip arounnd to the Horizontal falls n back) and would dread a broken spring out in the middle of nowhere..
I Think I will ge the Rocker springs installed asap and check axles as I do it and maybe replace them before trip if need be..
Thanks again for your ideas etc
