VHF radio problems
Submitted by stevo5858 on Mon, 2019-01-21 13:39
gday all, Just noticed the vhf radio in my boat was working properly just wondering if I am up for a new one or it is a simple fix. Was working fine till yesterday. Now turns on, but cant read any numbers on the screen, and only hear static. cant change channels or seem to be able to transmit or anything. Its a GME brand probably about 10 years old.
cheers for any tips

Throw it
Not worth trying to fix. Wouldn't spew in emergency situation if it didn't work.

Heck before you ditch it
Heck before you ditch it check that you have a decent power supply to it.
Those issues are exactly what my furuno was doing here at Rotto.
Turned out the fuse had a bit of corrosion on the pins and while it had 13 volts on the bus bar, as soon as it was turned on it dropped to 10 volts and did exactly as you described.
Check the easy simple and cheap stuff first.
Having said all that GME aren’t the best brand for reliability...
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

Yep my GME acts like that
Yep my GME acts like that with low voltage. But if it has shit itself I'd buy an Icom
