Ive got a waeco and love it and have never had a problem with it. But from what i hear engles are great too, just another "holden vs ford" thing really. Just comes down to personal choose i think. P.s this has come up a few times so a search mite get u quite a few opinions
Engel for me but never owned anything else. My Engel is 15 years old, been all over the state, take it camping when we head south, never needed to service it.
If you want it to last and work in extreme conditions then pay a little extra and get an engel. Those new engel eclipses are meant to be just as good if you don't mind the plastic casing and a little bit cheaper
Yep Had my Engel 10 years and has been all over and never missed a beat. Had it side by side with a Waeco on a trip once it still ran when battery got low while the Waeco stopped. Looked to be built tougher as well. Waeco had a good feature of turbo boost for a quick chill down though.
I'll throw my weight behind Waeco, I had an 40l and sold it to ungrade to an 80l. I love it, never had any problem. Really good value for the price. That said I have heard a lot of good about Englels, in fact I don't think I've ever heard a bad word. I think it comes down to price, you'll pay a bit more for a Engel.
Have a look at the new ARB fridges as well. I think the latest edition of 4x4 Action mag does a really good independant fridge review, does Waeco, Engel, ARB, and all the other lesser known brands, and tests all aspects of the fridge. Def worth a look if you're looking for one.
Engel for me again, bought an engel in 1994 for 700, sold it in 2011 for 500 still going like the day I bought it but the missus said we should take advantage of the great deals that were on offer so for 950 bag and all we got a newy. Luv It.
Got an Engel and have never ever had a problem with it, coming up for 5 years old. Bought a couple of waecos coming up for 2 years ago because the Engel was taller and wouldn't fit in the camper trailer. Have had nothing but problems with them in that the compressor was rooted in one of them and the other one had problems with the 12v point in the fridge. Took Waeco months to finally get it sorted and replace one fully and the other fixed. Given the choice I personally wouldn't buy one again but I know that many people have them and swear by them.
Both work great and each has its problems. If I was to get another fridge/freezer, it would be evacool. Fibreglass esky type with the compressor and controls on the end.Better insulated and that provides better performance. Father in law has a 110lt and works a treat and outdoes both my fridges.
if your using it on a boat then i would say waeco because of the plastic shell and light weight design, but I have had friends that have had problems with temp control and compressor failure so I would personally go for the engel. I have used an old one made in 1978 and it still works fine and I have had my 40lt for 5 years with no problems at all. The only problem with the engels on boats they are prone to rust out after prolonged use.
If you are into Bream fishing there a couple Engels up for grabs in the Perth bream classic on Sunday, you only need a top 10 finish then they will do a randow draw from the top 10.
Both good in my books, I have a few Engels that has not let me down in 14yrs of running, one under the work bench runs 24/7 for the last 6yrs, cant fault them, but if your coin dont streach enough for an Engel than the Waeco will do just fine
i have 2 waecos a 40l and 50l one for fridge anf one for freezer and have had no probs and being plattic there lighter and dont rust.
a mate has a 50l waeco and rolled his patrol a couple of weekends ago it was on its side for nearly 2 hours then rolled back over and the waeco didnt miss a beat the whole time.
How long have the Waecos been around? I know Engels have been around for ever and my parents one must be over 15 years old and still going strong. I'd buy on proven performance but it sounds like the Waecos go alright too?
will be able to crawl out the front window, kick in the back window and know that ya gunna have cold frothies to sit on top of ya car while its on its head and wait for the boys ta come an flip ya back over... haha
Pay a little more and get a National Luna. Ally or stainless on the outside better insulation equalls more efficiency and well finished. I've got 2 engels and 1 national luna and it leaves the engel for dead in efficiency. Opposite Lock sell them in Perth region or try Kulkyne Kampers on the net.
Look up national luna on the web and compare the different features. My 80ltr stays in the back of my wagon full time now running off a medium size deep cycle battery and an 80 watt solar panel. The finish on these fridges is superb inside and out with all edges rounded to reduce injuries from sharp corners. The seal is the same type that you see on household fridges not just a thin strip of rubber or stick on eva. Compared to my smaller Engels this fridge cycles far less in the same conditions. Hope this helps.
Engel if your going to treat them rough..if its just going to sit in the back of your car out of the elements, save your money with a waeco. Ive had a 40l waeco one for 5 years now.. hasnt missed a beat.
My 60l Engel is so freakin loud it has to be turned right down so the campsite can sleep at night. Seriously, after returning from the Easted trip I had it running in the garage at home for the following week. That's 2 brick walls and about 10m from my bed and I could hear/feel it every time the comp kicked in! Fine other than that, just noisy!
I have both, I feel the waeco uses more current, so you will run your battery flat quicker. The waeco's lid has busted its latch spring twice (but they fix it for free)
The turbo function on waeco is good, but will not operate unless you have a real good power supply.
imo i would not go with both i have an engel its ok but if you want real performance and last forever and can take a hard and i mean hard I would look at a evakool fridge mate or ya can go for a fiberglass model but they not as tough as the fridge mate look into them......

Yep, ENGEL, mine's 30 years old, been around OZ a few times, rusty, dented, noisey, but wouldn't buy anything else.
Bite the bullet, pay tops, but have a fridge that will last. Screw for the best deal with a cover and hat and stubbie holders, all ya can get.
Plenty of competition out there if you look around, Camping world is good, get a good deal at the 4x4 shows.
cheers.

I've seen an ENGEL at the 4x4 show, been in a rollover, that squashed you wouldn't fit a loaf of bread in it, no lid and just gladwrap over the top.
They had a thermometer inside it, it was running and keeping up to temp.
Dunno how the Waeco would fare!

My boat still has the original Engel fridge in it from new!
Fridge has been in place for 35 years! and still goes beautifull.
runs on 240V and 12volt.
As a matter of fact it goes way better because of the original gas in the system!
