Walpole Bream and King George

I'm heading to Walpole in a few weeks and was wondering what bait people have the best succes with when fish fishing for Bream and KGs. i have heard many just use coral prawns with decent success but thought there maybe something else that poeple had tried. i have heard ox heart for bream ?? any ideas ?? an older mate i have goes down and uses the coral prawns and swears by them and wont use anything else but i am thinking soft plastics, maggots.....just thinking of something different.

Ive found the best bait down

Ive found the best bait down there to be mulies, use 1/3 chunks or use the fillets. Half mulies cast near snags can account for some very solid bream as well!

We're far from Bream experts

We're far from Bream experts but we have done a trip down to Walpole the last four years in a row and found Herring to be a great bait.

We've trialed it many times in the same spots and found no difference in the catch rate between the prawns and Herring if the fish are around - so with Herring basically free that's what we go with now. We still chuck a couple of packs of prawns in anyways.

No doubt the prawns are good and i'm NOT knocking your mates preference but if you don't hook your Bream on those first couple of hits your bait is gone whereas the toughness of the Herring will give you more chances - great when your fishing with kids too - much less baiting up required.

We just fillet the Herring then cut into small slithers maybe 2 -3cm long then through the flesh side first onto a small wide gap hook with a running ball sinker. And you don't always need to fish the deep water - we've picked up some great fish in just inches of water hard up against the reeds.

It's a good tough bait that will also get you onto your KG's, Flathead and anything else that's around. Take some chicken laying pellets for the KG's.

Maybe just take a few Herring to trial yourself - have a great trip - Walpole is an awesome spot.

I have heard about the herring and certainly something I will try. It sounds like it is pretty experimental where to find the bream but should be good having a crack. I have some off cuts of cuttlefish that I was going to give the kgs a try with too. Definitely sound like I will have a good time down there, just need to get the lines wet. I have heard there are a fair few rocky outcrops around to try for the bream around the coal miners area which sound good, I haven't heard of many bream being taken on the southern part of the inlet though.....maybe just that not many have tried ?????
