Want to try spearing but....
Submitted by Mick71 on Sun, 2010-12-26 20:12
Hi Guys and Gals
I have always wanted to try spearfishing, and have been reading the forums, and will be giving Graham a call in the new year, just a problem that always is in the back of my mind is the fish with big teeth!!!
I have done quite a bit of snorkeling, but every time I put my head under water I hear a cello with the Jaws theme music. My question is do you ever get over it, or do most of you use shark-deterring equipment?
Thanks
Mick

Just dont think about it,
Just dont think about it, although I scuba so it is a much lower threat than freediving in my opinion.

she'll be right govner.
there is more of a chance getting attcked whilst you are going for a leisurely swim than whilst spearing. sure, i have seen countless sharks (majority of them up north ie dongora and upwards), but you actually see them, so you immediately have an advantage right there. you will very rarely see one that is over 2 - 2.5m, especially in metro. i have only really seen them (whilst diving/spearing) past rotto.
most of them keep their distance.
a few of them need an occasional prod with the spear tip.
there is the occasional one that needs a bit of "persuasion"....

You do get a little bit to
You do get a little bit to relaxed at times ,I think its a good thing to keep them in the back off your mind they are out there .But as Scotto said chances are slim .

shark shield
Don't know if it really works, but I feel better knowing it's there. I get zapped enough to keep me away from it so I'm thinking the sharks must hate that too.

spearing
best bet mate would be to join someone with abit of experiance in dealing with sharks and the like... more than one set of eyes always helps and a extra gun to do some prodding whilst you buddy or buddys sort a fish out is always handy also... after a few dive with people who have done so you will gain in confidence and enjoy your freediving/spearing alot more... NEVER take any shark for granted - always respect them and 99.99999% of the time you will be fine
hope that helps buddy

yep. I got buzzed 2 wkends
yep. I got buzzed 2 wkends ago by a 7-8ft bronzie off the back of mewstone.
I didn't follow the number one rule - never keep fish on you. I had a few sweetlip and a few other fish but couldn't be bothered swimming them back to the boat, as i didn;t have a floatline / stringer with me so i just put them in a catchbag.. THen when i was actually heading back bang this 7-8ft whaler circled me before charging up. I had to jab him a few times to keep him away. he then went after my mate. we got back to the boat eventually but it was too close.
Seen loads of sharks before but never had an aggressive one like this before. they all behave differently so never take them for granted.

Im not sure i have been for a spear where i haven't seen a shark. they are everywhere up here, but they are awesome. I find i am a bit nervouse till i see one, then i normaly end up swimming after it to have a look. mind you I havn't seen anything over sort of 8 to 10ft. but i herd its the one you dont see thats the problem haha.
I live with fear every day... sometimes she lets me go fishing.

I'm new to the whole
I'm new to the whole spearfishing thing, been giving it a red hot go in some 'questionable' waters ( around Karratha, Dampier, Exmouth ) and have a healthy awareness for the old grey suits. Had a few tame encounters, a few ' where the hell did that thing come from ' moments, but not ever felt the need to exit the water. The way I figure it, I have a loaded speargun, Worst case scenario I plug it in the skull, lose my speargun and live to tell the tale. Give it a go, you'll love it.
Been in Exmouth for the last 3 days, been in the water for at least 25 hours, not seen a single shark. Dragged along a mate, and some random guy from SeaBreeze and they're talking about going and buying their own equipment. Haha look out Freshwater tackle !!!!!!
If any of you guys are up here and want to have a go, I'll be around untill sunday or monday, Have a boat and a spare speargun.
just dhu it

build up
Mick , just start out in the shallow reefs and islands etc and build up your confidence and day by day try deeper and more open water, as the others have mentioned keep your eyes and keep the respect up for their areas and enjoy

It takes many dives to become
It takes many dives to become comfortable under the water .but that is the key to enjoying diving try not to think of sharks and just take in what is down there .since i have been on the camera I have become so relaxed and use a lot less air as I am consentrating on what I am doing and not worrying about what could be around .We dive every week and have not yet seen a shark .thats not to say there not around.

my shark deterring equipment=
my shark deterring equipment= speargun. most sharks wont do anything, like we have had greatwhites and stuff come up to us, the only shark i haven't seen underwater is a a tiger(which is odd cause i have dived the abrohols and steep point) and like i have never been attacked, yesterday at moore river there were a few sharks, moment u start berlying but like i said they come like 2m from u then swim away, when they come closer (like a bull shark at steep) u just hit them in the head, most sharks will just come look at u then swim of, or just eat ur fish on ur spear.

take a knife down with you
take a knife down with you and a mate so when the shark shows up, grab the knife, stab your mate in the leg and then piss off quickly
they are interested in what you've shot more than you, your just in there way, they are an amazing creature to watch under water for sure.
