Water near the bilge pump

Hi Guy....

Yesterday we have done the first launch . just wondering is it normal to have accumulate water near bilge pump ( probably around 1- 2 liters), the previous owner said it is normal because of the water from swell . we turn the bilge pump on twice ( 30 second)  just to empy the water for  boating for 4 hours . The deck still dry.

i will post the pict

Thanks

I dont think so not from swell. Maybe from leaking something. I get it from overflow of my live tank.

Bungs

Sun, 2013-11-24 10:34

Could simply be a bit of leakage through the bung hole past the bung and it's washer. I can get 1-2 litres of water in the bilge that way. I put a bit of lithium grease on the bung (if i remember) stops leaks for me. Easier to do up tight and to take out also.

Lithium grease or Marine grease or similar. Save the $ilicone grease for more important expensive things.

 Were you at Point Walter

Sun, 2013-11-24 13:16

Were you at Point Walter yesterday at about 1030?

Check the plugs. We had a mysterious leak on the last boat and turned out it was through the bungs. Tip the boat up, put a bit of water in it and wait for 30mins to have a check. We just took the floor up on the Stacer and put it in the hull but that was an ali so wasnt too hard. Depending on what boat you have it may be a bit more difficult. . Fibreglass is a different story

Bilge pump outlet pipe

Sun, 2013-11-24 16:15

Look at your bilge pump outlet and pipe. If it does not have a fitted non return valve and does not rise up high before dropping back to the outlet then waves splashing can run back into the bilge thru the pipe.

+ 1 check for reverse siphoning or other access points on engine well (holes where steering cables go through etc).

Hi All Thanks for the reply.

Hi All

Thanks for the reply. Yesterday I launched from from hillary. It is a fiberglass tub old haines hunter sf52 ( 1996). I couldn't see non return valve exist on the boat( what is it look like?) and I have a livebait tank but we didn't use it as the pump is not connected to battery.

just wondering is it still safe to  use for next trip? my missus said it may be from the bung, she said the rates its filling up was very slowly. We will try to apply silicon grease for next trip

Ohhhh is it maybe because of it's a new bung plug ( just replace the plug only before we went)

Cheers

Have a look

Mon, 2013-11-25 12:00

Have had water leak in one of mine through the motor transom bolt holes as these needed resealing... only discovered out when filled the boat up for a cyclonic wind event and saw the water coming out. My thoughts good to find out where and why to fix as I like a dry hull.
