Water temp 25.6 degrees

Hi guys,

 Was out diving last week and the water temps were ranging from 25.1 to 25.8 degrees out of Hillarys. I talked to a fisheries officier working out from the Abrolous Islands and he said the water temps were in the 28-29 degress and that it was bleaching the coral. I found this a bit concerning and wondering what the hell is going on in our waters;

1. Crays are usally walked back in 1st week of march - not here!

2. The water temps last year same time were 19-21 degrees!

3. Salmon run has not even started down south yet - reports that they will run in April

4. Reports of Marlin being caught of Perth and further south.

5. Mackeral caught of Woodmans point!

Any thoughts on this.....is this climate change or global warning. Whats next a iceberg of Albany!

Where have you been for the last couple of months?

Cyclones, La Nina event, hot humid weather, easterly winds, bits on the nightly news on tv, fish kills alond the mid west coast and all of a sudden the bell rings that something isn't right.

like I said John an abberation in the season. We have 20 yrs of reasonably normal weather then one year we get something a bit different and everyone's running around saying the sky is falling down. You've gotta admit we live in a reasonably stable climate. Where have I been? Hiding under my bed lol.

Must be if you think climate has been stable over the last 20 years, lol. Though, this years warm water is more due to la nina than global changes, so it wont be this warm in the water for a few years until the next la nina (a year which I guarantee will be warmer than 2010, which was the hottest (or equal hottest) year on record).

Pretty common weather evens

Pretty common weather events for a strong La Nina year.  Happened in 99 as well but not as strong as this one.

Check out the history of the SOI (Southern Osalation Index)

Scientists have been saying

Thu, 2011-03-10 19:21

Scientists have been saying for ages that a general warming of the globe does not mean that every single area in the globe will warm by exactly the same amount uniformly for each day of the year. Increasing the temperature disrupts weather patterns, so just because some areas of the globe are having cold winters does not mean the globe on average is not warming. In fact, expect more of it. Ireland actually put in a bid for the 2026 olympics despite having hardly any snow (but they will if the gulf stream weakens).

Also, just because some years are colder does not mean that the trend is reversing. Global warming doesnt mean that every year will be warmer than the one before it (though, of the 11 hottest years recorded, 10 of them were the last 10, and the other one was 1998). Overall though, on average, the earth is getting warmer.

Actually, a link to a really good site that dispells some of the most common myths in an easy to understand way: One of the pages on winters.

Water temp is up over 32 degrees here in Hedland. Warmer in the water than out of it at the moment.
